Lynda Hollinger-Janzen was doing paperwork at a church-based health-care center in the West African country of Benin when a baby arrived.
Seeing a baby wasn't uncommon. In the maternity ward of the hospital in Cotonou, Benin, where she was doing missionary work, women would pay about $3 to give birth, have their babies' umbilical cords cut with sterile instruments, and leave a few hours later. Lynda had gotten used to seeing newborn children and their mothers come in and out.
But this baby was different. A passerby had found the abandoned child and rushed him to the hospital. His leg was deformed, bent inward in a U-shape. Nobody knew how long he had been outside. Nobody was quite sure what to do.
