BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana football completed its non-conference schedule a perfect 4-0 after a 31-24 win against Wake Forest yesterday. The Hoosiers never trailed and held off a late Demon Deacons rally to secure the win.
Every Sunday, IUHoosiers.com looks back on the week that was and gets a head start on previewing the matchup to come. The Hoosiers (4-0) return home to play the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes (4-0) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Unbeaten: This part of recaps is beginning to sound repetitive, and that's a good thing for IU head coach Kevin Wilson's Hoosiers. Indiana remained one of five undefeated Big Ten teams, joining Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa and Northwestern.
Still Streaking: Indiana has won five consecutive games, dating back to last season. It is the longest streak since 1987 (five) and is tied for the sixth-longest in program history.
Road Win: IU's win against Wake Forest was the Hoosiers' first road win since defeating Missouri 31-27 on Sept. 20, 2014.
Physicality Factor: Wake Forest linebacker Brandon Chubb told reporters Indiana was the most physical team Wake Forest played so far this season. That's a credit to IU's offensive line, tight ends, junior running back Jordan Howard and sophomore running back Devine Redding for establishing a physical run game early on and never letting up.
Ground Attack Continues: If the non-conference season taught fans anything, it's that running backs coach Deland McCullough has something going in his position room. The Hoosiers continued to pound the ball on the ground, totaling 216 yards between Howard and Redding.
Speaking Of Howard: Though he said he doesn't look at his own statistics, if Howard did manage to sneak a look at them, he'd be impressed. Howard has 675 yards and four touchdowns on 111 rushes through one-third of the season, putting him on pace to eclipse 2,000 yards.
Sudfeld Climbing: Nate Sudfeld's name keeps getting higher and higher in the record books. The senior quarterback moved into sixth place on the IU career passing yards list (5,449) and fifth in career completions (423). His 205 yards against Wake Forest gives him 14 career games of 200-yards or more through the air, tying him with Trent Green for fourth-most in a career at IU.
Takeaway Points: Sophomore safety Tony Fields took his first career interception 20 yards for a touchdown for IU's second interception return for a score this season. The Hoosiers have eight takeaways through four games, resulting in 48 points.
Battling The Buckeyes: Indiana was one of the few teams to give Ohio State trouble last season. The last time the Hoosiers faced a No. 1 ranked team came on Oct. 21, 2006, in Columbus. They also lined up against the Buckeyes the last time a No. 1 team traveled to Bloomington on Oct. 31, 1998.
Undefeated vs. Undefeated: Saturday's game between Indiana and Ohio State will be a matchup of unbeaten, 4-0 teams to kick off the Big Ten season.
