Indiana's underclassmen earn their first Big Ten accolades of their career
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University sophomore Maddie Latino and freshman Noëlle Rother combined to win all three Big Ten weekly honors, the Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday. Latino received Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Rother earned the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week accolades.
Latino compiled a prolific offensive output in the Hoosiers' two games last weekend. The sophomore forward served an assist on Indiana's 69th-minute insurance goal by Nicole Volgraf in a 3-1 win over No. 16 Iowa. On Sunday, Latino scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 44th minute, in the Hoosiers' 3-2 win over No. 14 Northwestern. Latino's second goal against the Wildcats was her third game-winner for the Hoosiers this season (T-1st in the Big Ten).
Latino shares the Co-Offensive Player of the Week award with Maryland senior Welma Luus (3 goals in wins over Michigan and Michigan State). Latino is the first Hoosier to win the honor since Audra Heilman (September 2, 2014).
Rother had two outstanding performances in goal for Indiana's two wins in Big Ten play. On Friday, September 25 against Iowa, the freshman tallied five saves and allowed just one goal in a 3-1 win against No. 16 Iowa. On Sunday, against No. 14 Northwestern, Rother kept one of the Big Ten's best offenses at bay with 12 saves, inculding several heroic diving saves, in the 3-2 win for Indiana. To date, Rother has 40 saves (4th in Big Ten) and a save percentage of .702 (4th in Big Ten).
Rother is the first Indiana defender to claim Big Ten weekly honors since Maggie Olson (October 14, 2014). She is the first Indiana freshman since Hannah McDermott (November 5, 2013) to capture the freshman honor.
Indiana's wins over No. 16 Iowa and No. 14 Northwestern marks the first time since 2011 that the Hoosiers have won back-to-back games against ranked opponents. It is the first time in school history that they have accomplished that feat in one weekend of play.
Indiana (5-4, 2-0) returns to action on Friday, October 2 at 2:00 p.m. ET, when they host Kent State. The Hoosiers then hit the road on Sunday, October 4 for a road game against No. 16 Michigan at 1:00 p.m. ET.
