BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana cross country teams will take to the course to begin the 2015 season on Saturday, Sept. 5 as the Hoosiers host the Indiana Open. The first race will get started at 9:20 a.m. ET at the IU Championship Cross Country Course.
After a 15th-place finish last year at the NCAA Championships, the IU men find themselves ranked No. 11 nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) preseason poll, which was released on Tuesday. The Hoosier men have lofty expectations as the fall schedule gets underway.
IU returns NCAA experienced runners from a year ago in Matt Schwartzer, Jason Crist, Owen Skeete and Rorey Hunter, and will gain a boost from redshirt sophomore and former All-Big Ten runner Carl Smith as he comes back from an injury that sidelined him in 2014.
The Indiana women are also looking to make some noise in 2015. Junior Amanda Behnke will be a leader for the team along with Jill Whitman, Madison Stenger and Amelia Reynolds who each competed at NCAA Regionals last season.
Whitman is coming off a summer where she claimed the 3,000m title at the USATF Junior Championships in June and hopes to ride that momentum into the fall. Behnke closed the outdoor track and field season last spring on a strong note as she was runner-up at Big Tens in the 10,000m and earned honorable mention honors at the NCAA meet with a 22nd place finish in that event.
The women will take to the course on Saturday at 9:20 a.m. for a 5K run to get the meet started. The men's 8K race will start at 10:10 a.m.
