Indiana vs. Southern Illinois
September 5, 2015
• In his Hoosiers debut, Jordan Howard rushed for 145 yards on 20 carries (7.2 average) with three touchdowns (a career-high), including the game-winner with :58 remaining. Howard now owns 12 career 100-yard games and five career multi-TD games. The junior tallied 15 scores in his two seasons at UAB. Howard added two receptions for 25 yards.
• Sophomore Devine Redding scored Indiana's first touchdown of the season, a 13-yard rush, at the 9:47 mark in quarter one. Redding added his second from three yards out to put the Hoosiers up with 2:34 remaining in the third.
• Redding finished the game with 57 yards on 16 carries (3.6 average)
• Fifth-year senior Nate Sudfeld threw for 349 yards, the second-highest total of his career, on 19-of-32 passing with a 57-yard touchdown. Sudfeld now has five 300-yard games and five career 50-plus yard TD passes. He added a career-high 46 rushing yards, which included a career-long 21-yard rush.
• Sudfeld moved into seventh in completions (365), seventh in passing yards (4,655), eighth in total offense (4,772), a tie for fourth in passing touchdowns (35), second in 300-yards games (5) and sixth in 200-yard games (11) in Indiana history.
• Redshirt junior Ricky Jones reached the end zone for the first time in his career, a 57-yard pass from Sudfeld, to open the second half scoring. Jones came into 2015 with 60 career receiving yards and four receptions. Today Jones pulled in six catches for 186 yards (both career-highs).
• Jones final reception of the day was for 71 yards, which set up the game-winning touchdown rush by Howard. His 186 yards rank ninth on IU's single-game list and are the most since Cody Latimer had 189 vs. Illinois on Nov. 9, 2013.
• Redshirt junior Mitchell Paige had career-highs in receptions (4) and yards (32).
• True freshman safety Jonathan Crawford blocked a 49-yard Southern Illinois field goal attempt in the opening stanza, which led to Indiana's first points. Bobby Richardson was the last Hoosier to block a field goal. Richardson's came against Penn State on Nov. 8, 2014.
• Crawford closed the game with eight tackles to go along with the block.
• Redshirt sophomore Marcus Oliver forced a pair of fumbles in the game, giving him five in just 15 career games. The linebacker finished with a career-high 10 tackles on the day.
• Freshman cornerback Andre Brown, Jr., recovered the first fumble and redshirt junior linebacker Dawson Fletcher made his first career fumble recovery.
• Indiana is 39-17 all-time in Memorial Stadium openers. The Hoosiers have victories in 13 of their last 14 and wins in 30 of their last 34 home starters. Kevin Wilson owns a 4-1 mark in his five opening weekends.
• Junior linebacker T.J. Simmons and senior defensive end Nick Mangieri led the team with 11 tackles each. This is a career high for Mangieri, who added one sack as well.
• Griffin Oakes nailed a 45-yard field in the third quarter and another from 22 yards with 9:08 left in the fourth. The redshirt sophomore also hit all six of his extra points. Oakes is 15-of-20 on field goals in his career, 4-of-5 from 40-49 yards, and 29-of-29 in extra points for his career.
• With 595 yards of total offense, this marks the 12th time in the Kevin Wilson era that the Hoosiers have accumulated at least 500 yards.
• Left guard Wes Martin, wide receiver Ricky Jones, wide receiver Mitchell Paige, running back Jordan Howard, linebacker Marcus Oliver, safety Kiante Walton, safety Jonathan Crawford, cornerback Rashard Fant and cornerback Andre Brown, Jr., made their first career starts for the Hoosiers.
• Right guard Dan Feeney, defensive end Nick Mangieri, quarterback Nate Sudfeld and punter Erich Toth served as Indiana's game captains.
• IU won the toss and elected to defer.
• The Hoosiers wore the crimson state flag helmet.
