IU Starts Strong at Indiana Open

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana cross country teams began the 2015 season on Saturday by taking first place in both the men's and women's races over Tennessee Tech at the IU Championship Cross Country Course. On a hot, humid morning, IU's Brianna Johnson took first place in the women's race as Owen Skeete won the men's race.
The women's 5K started the day with IU taking the top eight spots and 11 of the top 12. Johnson clocked in at 18:18.97. She was followed by Madison Stenger in second place (18:38.35) and Maggie Allen (18:39.29) in third. Haley Harris finished in fourth in a time of 18:44.79 as Chanli Mundy rounded out the Hoosier scoring in fifth in 18:49.35.
Other top ten finishers for Indiana included Kelsey Harris in sixth (18:59.77), Katherine Receveur in seventh (19:06.27), Olivia Hippensteel in eighth (19:15.04) and Corinne Cominator in 10th (19:28.99). IU finished with a perfect team score of 15.
In the men's 8K run, Skeete crossed the line in 25:48.41 to pace the team. Three Hoosiers came just behind him with Jeremy Coughler in second (25:50.48), Josh Roche in third (25:52.66) and Kyle DuVall in fourth (25:54.29). Jason Crist was the final IU scorer with a sixth place finish in 26:19.33. As a team, Indiana tallied 16 points.
Kyle Burks (7th, 26:22.66), Mark Chandler (8th, 26:40.13) and Carl Smith (10th, 26:50.73) rounded out top 10 finishers for the IU men.
The Hoosiers will next take to the course on Sept. 18 with the Indiana Intercollegiate meet in Terre Haute, Ind. hosted by Indiana State.
