Indiana football defeated Southern Illinois 48-47 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday to improve to 1-0 on the season.
Every Sunday, IUHoosiers.com will look back at the week that was and get a head start on previewing the matchup to come. The Hoosiers (1-0) will remain at home this weekend to play Florida International (1-0) on Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m.
Just win: As cliché as it sounds, it's true: Indiana is 1-0. Head coach Kevin Wilson said he needed to remind his players to be excited that they won because with the parity in college football, no wins are assured. The Hoosiers found a way to win and can move forward.
Sudfeld's back: Indiana senior Nate Sudfeld passed for 349 yards and a touchdown in his first game since separating his shoulder against Iowa last season. Sudfeld said afterward that he didn't feel held back at all during the game, also evident by his five rushes for 46 yards.
Spreading the love: Sudfeld found eight different targets in the win, showing confidence to throw to anyone on the field whether they be a receiver, tight end or a running back. Indiana's starting receivers—Ricky Jones, Mitchell Paige and Simmie Cobbs, Jr.—did most of the heavy lifting. They combined for 13 catches for 282 yards.
Howard as advertised: Junior running back Jordan Howard didn't take long to get acclimated to playing in Bloomington. The UAB transfer ran for 145 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, displaying a power-style run game Indiana's coaches have been raving about. Howard told reporters that he was simply playing the way Indiana expected him to play.
Stopping Iannotti: Redshirt sophomore linebacker Marcus Oliver admitted the Hoosiers didn't expect to see Southern Illinois quarterback Mark Iannotti take off with the ball as much as he did. The fifth-year senior quarterback ran for 103 yards and a touchdown in the first half. Oliver said once Indiana recognized what was happening, the Hoosiers were able to better contain Iannotti to just three rushing yards in the second half.
Not much pass rush: Senior defensive end Nick Mangieri picked up the game's lone sack 31 seconds into the fourth quarter. The statistic sheets show only three quarterback hurries and six tackles for loss between the two defenses combined.
Freshmen jump right in: Freshman defensive backs Jonathan Crawford and Andrew Brown, Jr., both made potentially game-saving plays at one point or another throughout the win. Crawford, who had eight tackles, had a shoe-string tackle on the first play of the game to save a touchdown and blocked a field goal. Brown was credited with breaking up a pass on Southern Illinois' two-point conversion late to retain the lead.
Value the ball: Indiana's offense didn't commit a single turnover for the first time since the Hoosiers' victory at Missouri last season. Meanwhile, Indiana's defense forced two fumbles on the day to help the Hoosiers win the turnover battle.
The Panthers are coming: As mentioned above, Florida International will be in Bloomington on Saturday after opening its season with a win. The Panthers defeated in-state rival Central Florida, 15-14, after being down 14-3 at halftime. Sophomore quarterback Alex McGough completed 29-of-38 passes for 260 yards and sophomore Alex Gardner rushed for 75 yards and a score to pace FIU's offense.
Running backs will be tested: One of the key reasons behind Florida International's upset win was its rush defense. The Panthers allowed Central Florida to just 46 rushing yards on 30 carries. Howard and sophomore Devine Redding looked impressive in week one, and they will get a strong test in week two.
