BATON ROUGE, La. – The Indiana Women's Soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to LSU in Baton Rouge on Sunday afternoon. Indiana nearly matched the Tigers on shots on goal and held a 7-4 advantage on corners, but was unable to find the back of the net.
LSU struck twice in the early going as Summer Clarke scored a pair of goals in the seventh and ninth minutes. Her first goal came off the assist from Natalia Gomez-Junco as Clarke sent it in from 20 yards out. That score ended the Indiana defense's scoreless streak at 463 minutes, which ranked second in program history.
Three minutes later, Clarke scored after a loose ball on a LSU corner found its way to Jordane Carvery and Heather Magee, who sent it to Clarke for the goal.
"I thought we had a good game plan but unfortunately we lost track of players inside the 18," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "When you play a team that has such dynamic-attacking personality players in their front line, you can't do that. We have to learn from the mistakes that we made early on."
The Tigers further increased their lead after Jorian Baucom knocked in a penalty kick to the left side in the 24th minute.
Indiana came out aggressively to start the second half as freshman Abby Allen got a good look in the 46th minute after LSU goalkeeper Catalina Rubiano was put off-balance, but defender Megan Lee was able to deflect the ball out of play.
"If we could have started to strike back one at a time, you never know what could happen," said Berbary.
Allen led Indiana with two shots on goal, while fellow freshmen Maya Piper and Hanna Johnson each registered one on-target look.
The Tigers took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity in the final third as Baucom fired a left-footed shot to the right post to push the advantage to 4-0 in the 50th minute of play.
Indiana's Piper, who recorded her first career goal against Middle Tennessee State on Friday, looked to put the Hoosiers on the board just one minute later after she sent in a header off a corner to the left post, but the ball was saved by a diving Rubiano.
"Today we made too many mistakes and we were punished for it," said Berbary. "The only way we're going to get better is to get our heads' up, learn from the mistakes we made today and don't continue them the rest of the season."
The Hoosiers travel to South Bend, Ind. on Friday to face Notre Dame, before returning home on Sunday to host Ball State.
