BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Indiana quarterback Nate Sudfeld completed 6-of-13 passes for 46 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions to help lead his West team to a 29-9 victory in the 91st annual East-West Shrine Game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Saturday.
The all-star game capped a week-long training camp for NFL hopefuls who looked to impress scouts and move higher on national draft boards. By the end of the week, Sudfeld made NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock's "Made Money List" with his play.
Sudfeld entered the Shrine Game late in the second quarter with his West team already up 20-9.
Former Wisconsin Badgers defensive back Michael Caputo took an interception 66 yards for the West team to give the West a scoring opportunity from the 11-yard line with just 13 seconds left in the half.
A 5-yard rush moved Sudfeld's offense to the 6-yard line. He tried to send a back-shoulder pass to a receiver in the end zone, but his throw was short and landed incomplete, bringing out the field goal unit before time expired.
He returned to lead the West offense to begin the second half and continued throughout the entire third quarter. Sudfeld's fifth and final series was his best, as the West went 36 yards on eight plays and ended with a score.
Sudfeld picked up the bulk of his passing yards on second-and-9 with a 22-yard completion to former Stanford receiver Devon Cajuste down the sideline. On fouth-and-5 at the 26-yard line, he drew the defense offside to pick up a first down and continue the drive.
The West offense took advantage, picking up a first-and-goal after a defensive pass interference call. On second-and-goal from the 6-yard line, Sudfeld zipped a pass to Illinois' Gerinomo Allison for a touchdown to end his day.
Sudfeld has been no stranger to the limelight with NFL personnel looking on.
He finished second in the Papa John's Quarterback Challenge at last summer's Manning Passing Academy before leading the Hoosiers to the New Era Pinstripe Bowl his senior season. That same summer and the previous one, he spent time alongside Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck in Bloomington at Luck's Change The Play tour.
Should he be drafted—as many projections insist—Sudfeld will become the ninth Indiana quarterback to be taken in the NFL Draft. That total includes Antwaan Randle El, who was immediately converted into a wide receiver.
Gibran Hamdan was the last Indiana quarterback to be drafted, going in the seventh round to Washington in 2003.
Trent Green made the most successful transition from Indiana into the pros after being selected by San Diego in the eighth round of the 1993 draft. He made 113 starts between the Chargers, Kansas City, Washington and St. Louis and threw for 28,475 yards and 162 touchdowns against 114 interceptions.
Sudfeld will look to join Green and the other Indiana quarterbacks to make a career in the NFL after leaving as arguably the most successful passer in program history. He finished his IU career as the school's all-time leader in passing touchdowns (61), passing yardage (7,879), 350-yard games (6), and 300-yard games (11). He also finished second with 593 completions, third with 8,011 total yards and fourth with 983 attempts in 37 career games.
