Hoosiers Victorious Over VCU, Marquette

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 53 Indiana men's tennis team took care of business at home with wins over Virginia Commonwealth and Marquette on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center.
In the opening match against VCU, seniors Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk gave the Hoosiers early momentum with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Raheel Manji and freshman Afonso Salgado clinched the doubles point for IU with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles the Hoosiers (2-2) got off to a hot start as each of their six players won their first set. Bednarczyk gave the IU a 2-0 lead in the match with a 6-1, 6-2 straight set victory.
VCU (4-1) built some momentum on their side, taking two second sets, but that did not deter IU as Monette battled to a tiebreak in his second set and put the Hoosiers up 3-0 with a 7-5, 7-6 win at No. 1 doubles.
Junior Matthew McCoy gave Indiana the deciding match point with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles to give Indiana the 4-0 victory in the match.
The second match started out in a similar fashion, with Manji and Salgado and Monette and Bednarczyk taking victories in doubles to put the Hoosiers ahead 1-0 in the match.
Monette, who is now 4-0 on the season and ranked No. 27 in the country gave the Hoosiers their first point in singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Manji controlled his match for a 6-1, 6-1 win to put IU up 3-0.
For the deciding point, it was freshman Antonio Cembellin with his first home win of his career. Cembellin won his first set, but dropped set two. He rebounded and closed out a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory to put the match in the win column for the Hoosiers.
Up next Indiana returns home next week as they host Ball State and Washington on Friday Feb. 5 at the IU Tennis Center.
