COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Indiana fell on the road to No. 5/5 Maryland inside the Xfinity Center on Saturday afternoon, 86-63. A big third quarter from the Terrapins separated them from the Hoosiers as Maryland won its seventh straight.
Amanda Cahill led the Hoosiers with 14 points and eight rebounds as Tyra Buss added 13 points. IU struggle to find any offense as Indiana shot just 34.8 percent from field.
Indiana (13-9, 5-5) jumped in front early in the first, 5-2, thanks a Karlee McBride 3-point field goal and jumper from Buss. Maryland (19-2, 8-1) then strung together an 13-1 run to take a 15-6 advantage with 4:26 remaining in the quarter. The Terrapins would lead 23-10 heading into the second period as IU struggled in the opening quarter hitting just 4-of-17 field goals (23.5 percent).
A Buss three-point play put the Hoosiers within eight, 27-19, in the second quarter. Maryland halted that momentum to get back to 14-point advantage before taking a 38-27 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Alexis Gassion and Cahill scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the Terrapin lead to eight. After a Maryland field goal, Cahill nailed a 3-point field goal to trail 41-34.
The No. 5 Terrapins then caught fire. Maryland went on a 10-0 run in under a minute and eventually scored 14-straight points to lead 55-34 with 5:30 left in the third quarter.
That was all Maryland needed to separate itself from the Hoosiers to take the win.
Gassion finished with nine points for Indiana as McBride and Royster each added eight points.
Maryland shot 53.1 percent from the field and outrebounded the Hoosiers, 45-35. Four Terrapins scored in double figures as Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Brene Moseley led them with 16 points each.
Indiana will play four of its next five games inside Assembly Hall beginning on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. ET against Iowa live on the Big Ten Network.
