CINCINNATI, Ohio – Indiana women's tennis split its double-header on Saturday at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club, falling to Xavier in the opening match before rebounding to top Cincinnati in the afternoon. Both matches ended in 4-3 margins.
In the first match, Xavier (2-1) took the doubles point to start. IU's Danielle Wolf then evened the match with a win at No. 6 singles over Xavier's Sophia Abelson with a strong second set, 7-6 (4), 6-0. Kim Schmider then pushed Indiana in front momentarily with her 7-6 (1), 6-2 triumph over XU's Lauren Ghidotti in the No. 5 match.
The Musketeers then won at No. 2 and No. 4 before Indiana's Sarah McLean outlasted Amina Ismail in three sets, 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-2 to make it a 3-3 team score.
The final result would come down to the No. 1 match where IU's Madison Appel was pitted against Xavier's Sydney Liggins. Appel took the opening set with a tiebreak win, 7-6 (6), before Liggins rebounded to take the second set, 6-3. The third and deciding set would also come down to a tiebreak decision. Appel jumped in front 6-4, but Liggins crawled back to take the tiebreaker, 8-6, and clinched the win for the Musketeers.
In the second match of the day against Cincinnati (2-1), Indiana (3-1) won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
In singles, UC's Ali Miller won at No. 2 before Appel downed Lauren Bellinger in the No. 1 matchup, 6-2, 7-6 (4). Shcmider then gave IU a 3-1 team lead with a victory at No. 4.
After a Cincinnati win at No. 6, McLean then clinched the win for Indiana as she downed UC's Natalia Abdalla, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
"I was extremely proud and pleased with how hard we competed today," head coach Lin Loring said. "We were not at full strength due to injuries and sickness, but we battled the whole day. There were a lot of three sets matches and tiebreakers, and in some cases we just ran out of gas. But the effort was there the entire day. Once we get healthy and people back in the lineup, we should be okay."
The Hoosiers will return to Bloomington next weekend for a trio of matches beginning with a double-header on Saturday, Feb. 6 against Western Michigan and Morehead State.
