LINCOLN, Neb. – Indiana Women's Soccer dropped a 1-0 game to Nebraska on Friday night.
The Cornhuskers (9-4-0, 3-2-0 Big Ten) tested the Hoosier (5-7-1, 2-3-0 Big Ten) defense early, putting up a pair of shots in the first five minutes from Caroline Flynn, her second of which was saved by freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu.
Nebraska earned a pair of corner kicks 10 minutes later, after the first was cleared, Jaycie Johnson put up a header on target that was stopped by L'Hommedieu.
L'Hommedieu posted all four of her saves in the first half of action.
Indiana's first shot of the game came from junior Kayla Smith in the 26th minute, but it was saved by Nebraska's Aubrei Corder.
Just seven minutes, it appeared as if the Hoosiers had taken a 1-0 lead as freshman Macy Miller found the back of the net. However, the referees whistled her offside and waved off the goal.
The Hoosiers earned a couple chances coming out of the halftime break, including a blocked shot by sophomore Cassidy Blacha in the 48th minute to give Indiana its lone corner kick of the night. The Cornhuskers cleared the corner but were called for a handball just a few minutes later. The ensuing free kick found its way to the head of sophomore Maya Piper, whose look was saved by Corder.
Nebraska broke the stalemate in the 53rd minute as Johnson headed in a ball served by Sydney Miramontez on a corner kick. The score was Johnson's ninth of the season.
"We asked the kids to be disciplined in what they were doing and I thought they did that," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "The set piece punished us tonight and unfortunately those win and lose you games."
Indiana looked to answer quickly as freshman Julia De Angelis sent the ball to redshirt sophomore Mykayla Brown in close range of the goal, but it was saved in the 61st minute.
"We just need to continue to be a bit more dangerous and threatening in the final third," said Berbary. "When we get those few chances that we were able to get tonight, we have to be able to finish them. We're looking for someone to step up on this team and be that special player for us."
The game ended in a flurry of activity as freshman Allison Jorden's shot from 16 yards out was saved, the ball bounced around, but Corder was able to land on it and end the late threat.
Indiana returns to action on Thursday evening as the Hoosiers play host to defending champion Penn State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET. and admission is free of charge.
