LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 7-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the No. 2-ranked Louisville Cardinals, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Lynn Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky.
With the victory, Indiana improves to 8-1-4 on the season overall, while Louisville falls to 9-2-2 on the season. IU is now 3-1-2 against ranked opponents this season.
Trevor Swartz scored the game-winner on a penalty kick for the Hoosiers, while Grant Lillard netted his second goal of the season in the first half. Jeremiah Gutjahr recorded his first assist of the season.
IU goalkeeper Colin Webb led a tremendous second-half effort defensively for the Hoosiers, making three saves in the victory.
In the 12th minute, the Hoosiers took an early lead over the Cardinals. Working on the right side of the pitch, just inside the 18-yard box, Gutjahr sent a great cross to the back post. The ball found the head of Lillard, who finished back across the face of goal for his second score of the season, giving IU a 1-0 lead.
Just six minutes later, the Cardinals were able to equalize on a header from Tate Schmitt. At half, the match remained tied, 1-1.
Just 52 seconds in to the second half, the Hoosiers were awarded a penalty kick as Tanner Thompson was pulled down by a UL defender trying to collect the ball after a cross. Swartz stepped to the spot for IU and buried his attempt, giving IU a 2-1 lead.
Louisville ramped up the offense after going down a goal, but the IU defense would not break. Most of the shots from the Cardinals were not on goal in the final 45 minutes, as Webb had to make only one save in the second half.
For the match, Louisville out-shot the Hoosiers, 13-7, marking just the fourth time this season that an opponent had more looks than IU.
Indiana is the first team to score more than one goal on Louisville this season and is also the first squad to beat the Cardinals in Lynn Stadium this year. With the victory, IU improves 19-4-1 all-time against Louisville.
The No. 7 Indiana Hoosiers will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 11 when the team travels east to face Ohio State. Kickoff in Columbus is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.
