BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Women's Philanthropy initiative at IU has been instrumental in the early success of the IU Athletics fundraising efforts as part of For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign. To date, IU Athletics has totaled $68.5 million in leadership capital gifts with $50.5 million of that total being driven by women donors, accounting for 74 percent of the current leadership gift total.
"These generous gifts to IU Athletics affirm what the research tells us—that women are motivated to give and have the capacity to make major transformative gifts," IU First Lady Laurie Burns McRobbie said. "More women are educated, working full-time, and earning more than ever. Across a wide range of causes and organizations, women are giving more than men and realizing their potential to make a difference in the world."
These gifts, led by Women's Philanthropy Leadership Council founding member Cindy Simon Skjodt's historic $40 million contribution to the renovation of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, have and will transform IU Athletics and the students that participate in the intercollegiate sports in Bloomington. Along with Simon Skjodt's gift, additional major women-driven gifts will be announced in the coming months.
"We are deeply grateful for the incredible generosity of the women who have helped to lead the way for IU Athletics' part of the For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign," said IU Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass. "I want to especially thank Laurie Burns McRobbie for her extraordinary leadership and everyone associated with the Women's Philanthropy Leadership Council for helping connect these phenomenal and accomplished women to IU Athletics. Their gifts, accounting for 74 percent of all capital gifts so far, are responsible for preserving the historic Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall for future generations, and building facilities that will profoundly enhance the experience of students who participate in intercollegiate athletics for years to come."
Women's Philanthropy at IU connects alumnae and women friends with their areas of interest across the university and offers programming and opportunities to give back to IU, with an overall goal of developing women's philanthropic leadership. The program, driven by research coming out of IU's Women's Philanthropy Institute, was founded in 2010 by a group of visionary women led by Burns McRobbie.
Since 2010, more than 60 women including Simon Skjodt—and several men—have served on the Women's Philanthropy Leadership Council, which oversees annual grant awards benefiting students and faculty on all of IU's campuses. The program has an active network of more than 2,000 alumnae and friends.
The gifts count toward the $2.5 billion campaign, For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign.
For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign is taking place on all IU-administered campuses including IU Bloomington, Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis, IU East, IU Kokomo, IU Northwest, IU South Bend, and IU Southeast. The campaign will conclude in December 2019 to coincide with IU's bicentennial year celebration in 2020.
