BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana senior wide receiver Mitchell Paige has been named one of 30 NCAA FBS student-athletes as candidates for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Paige, who has a team-best 22 grabs for 261 yards in 2016, recorded his first two TD receptions of the year in back-to-back games at No. 2 Ohio State and the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter against Michigan State. In addition to his touchdown grab against the Spartans, Paige also tallied the first TD pass of his career in the third quarter when he hit quarterback Richard Lagow on a 5-yard throwback pass.
In 2015, Paige led the Hoosiers with six touchdowns (T-6th in the Big Ten), finished second with 57 receptions (T-10th) and third with 684 yards (16th). He averaged 4.4 catches and 52.6 yards per game.
The Carmel, Ind., native returned 18 punts for 199 yards (5th in the Big Ten, 30th nationally), good for an 11.1 average (5th, 22nd), with two TDs (T-1st, T-2nd). His two punt return scores share a program single-season record, are tied for the second-most in school history and share the fifth-most in Big Ten history.
Off the field, Paige has participated in Read Across America and with the 2nd & 7 Foundation. He served as a motivational speaker at Bloomington's Binford Elementary After School Program and volunteered weekly at Bloomington's Highland Park Elementary School as a recess monitor. Paige has also assisted with the Monroe County Youth Football Association.
To determine the final Senior CLASS Award winner, the 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. Along with the winner, the 10 finalists will be awarded Senior CLASS Award first- or second-team honors.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January. For more information on the candidates, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
