COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind scores from three freshmen, Indiana Women's Soccer defeated Ohio State on Thursday night, 3-2. The win was the first against the Buckeyes since 2010 and the first in Columbus since 2002.
"I think we're starting to peak at the right time," said head coach Amy Berbary. "It's a huge win for us. No one on our team – including the coaching staff – had beaten Ohio State so this is one we'd been looking forward to for a while."
The Hoosiers (6-7-3, 3-2-2 Big Ten) jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Buckeyes (9-5-2, 3-3-2 Big Ten) tied up the game by scoring a pair of goals in a four-minute span in the 64th and 68th minutes. However, freshman Sydney Kilgore knocked the game-winner in the 73rd minute on her second career score and second in as many games.
Chandra Davidson gave Indiana an early 1-0 lead as she netted her first career goal in the seventh minute. After senior Veronica Ellis served the ball into sophomore Maya Piper, a shot from Piper was blocked with the rebound going to redshirt sophomore Mykayla Brown. Brown's shot was saved by Megan Geldernick, but fell to Davidson who knocked it in past a OSU defender.
Ohio State's first on-target look of the day came in the 19th minute as Nichelle Prince sent one in from the top of the box, but freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu was there to make the save. The reining Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree made four saves on the day, including one in the 23rd minute off the foot of Lindsay Agnew to keep the game at 1-0 going into the break.
Allison Jorden pushed Indiana's lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute as she headed in a ball served in by freshman Meghan Scott on a corner kick. Scott's service curved inside the box to Jorden, who sent it in the lower right corner.
"Three freshmen getting themselves in position to get a goal and actually finish it just speaks volumes to the depth we have on this team," said Berbary. "Being able to rely on both our newcomers and our seasoned players just makes us that much more dangerous."
However, the advantage didn't last long as Ohio State quickly responded in 64th minute off the foot of Emma Firenze. Just four minutes later, Agnew equalized as she dribbled the ball through the Indiana defenders and ricocheted a shot of L'Hommedieu.
The Hoosiers found the winner with 17 minutes remaining as junior Kayla Smith dumped the ball off to sophomore Caroline Dreher. Her service from 30 yards out landed perfectly to Kilgore inside the six-yard box and she sent it in to the center of the net.
Ohio State didn't go quietly as Prince put up an on-target look with just 19 seconds remaining, but L'Hommedieu was there to make the stop.
"We have to continue to sort things out because Ohio State is a very good team and the game got way too open in the second half," said Berbary. "But I'm really proud of the team to stay focused. We talk a lot about the mental side of the game and we were able to keep our heads, find a way to get it done and get the victory today."
Up next, the Hoosiers head to Maryland to take on the Terrapins on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on BTN Plus.
