10/15/2016 9:48:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana volleyball team got out to an 8-3 lead in the opening set, but could not continue the momentum as they dropped a three set match against Penn State (25-16, 25-18, 25-18) on Saturday at University Gym.
Senior Taylor Lebo tallied nine digs and became the 13th player in school history to reach 1,000 career digs. Lebo currently has 1,003 digs, which is tied for 12th on the Hoosiers all-time list for career digs.
Senior Allison Hammond led the Hoosiers with 10 kills and freshman setter Victoria Brisack posted 27 assists and five digs.
Freshman Deyshia Lofton posted seven kills and four blocks for the Hoosiers (13-8, 2-6 Big Ten). It was Lofton, who gave Indiana early fire power with a solo block and kill to put Indiana up 8-3 in the opening set.
Penn State (16-3, 8-0 Big Ten) responded with a 5-0 scoring run to seize back the momentum and win the first set, 25-16.
In the second set the Nittany Lions jumped out to a 6-2 lead and the Hoosiers called a timeout. Penn State pushed that lead to 14-8.
Indiana worked its way back into the set as Brisack got a solo block and a Penn State attack error brought the Hoosiers within two at 18-16. The Nittany Lions scored seven of the last nine points of the set to win it, 25-18 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final set of the match, the Hoosiers fell behind 17-8, but scored four straight points as part of a 6-1 scoring run to close the gap to four at 18-14. An Indiana service error and Penn State kill gave the Nittany Lions the 20-14 lead and they took the third set, 25-18 to win the match.
Up next the Hoosiers travel to Illinois on Friday Oct. 21 and continue the road trip at Northwestern on Sunday Oct. 23.
