Game Notes: Indiana at Northwestern

Setting The Scene
•Indiana (3-3, 1-2 B1G East) faces its second straight Big Ten West opponent when it travels to Northwestern (3-3, 2-1 B1G West) on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CDT/noon EDT at Ryan Field (47,330; Grass) on BTN.
•The Hoosiers and Wildcats are meeting for the first time since 2012, also in Evanston.
•Seven of the last nine games between the two teams have been decided by seven points or less. Those seven contests were decided by a combined 26 points with two extending into overtime.
The Coaches
•Kevin Wilson is in his sixth season as Indiana head coach. Wilson led IU to the 2015 New Era Pinstripe Bowl, the program's first postseason appearance since 2007. He has mentored three first team All-Americans, 25 players who have either moved on to the NFL or received camp invites and a five-year program record 111 Academic All-Big Ten honorees. The offense has set 56 school records during his tenure.
•Pat Fitzgerald is in his 11th season as head coach at Northwestern and owns a 73-59 (.553) record. Fitzgerald starred at linebacker for the Wildcats (1993-96) and has guided NU to six bowl games.

•Indiana has faced three straight ranked opponents, going 1-2 with a victory over No. 17 Michigan State.
•IU has met five top 10 teams in its last 15 games and played three of them to a one-score game. The Hoosiers also defeated No. 17 Michigan State (2016) and took No. 15 Michigan (2015) to double overtime in that same span.
•Indiana is tied for 2nd in the Big Ten in defensive TDs (2, T-14th nationally), 4th in pass efficiency defense (110.5, 19th) and interceptions (7, T-30th), 5th in first downs allowed (111, 27th) and tied for 5th in takeaways (11, T-43rd).
•IU joins San Diego State as the only two teams in the country that have not surrendered a 30-plus yard rush.
•The Hoosiers defense limited No. 10 Nebraska to 27 points, 360 total yards, 208 passing yards and 152 rushing yards. The Cornhuskers entered the game averaging 37.0 points, 472.6 total yards, 238.4 passing yards and 234.2 rushing yards.
•This comes after Indiana's defense held No. 2 Ohio State to 93 passing yards and 383 total yards. The Buckeyes entered the game averaging 57.0 points, 332.0 rushing yards, 244.2 passing yards and 576.2 total yards.
•The 93 passing yards allowed marked the first time IU held a Big Ten opponent under 100 passing yards since Wisconsin (41 yards) on Nov. 11, 2012.
•For the fourth straight week, junior LB Tegray Scales led the team in tackles. He recorded his fourth consecutive game in double digits against the Cornhuskers, posting a game-high 12 stops (8 solo) to go along with two TFLs.
•Scales' four double-digit games put him in a tie for first in the Big Ten (T-9th nationally).
