BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced Wednesday their selections for the Longstreth / NFHCA Division I players of the week. Indiana goalkeeper Noëlle Rother received honors as the national Defensive Player of the Week. Rother becomes the first NFHCA national weekly honoree in Indiana field hockey history.
Rother posted the Hoosiers' third shutout of the season, the sixth of her career, in Friday's 1-0 win at No. 12 Michigan. She led the defense with seven saves, lifting Indiana to their first road win over a top-15 conference foe since 2006.
On Sunday at Michigan State, Rother compiled another valiant effort in Indiana's 1-0 loss at Ralph Young Field. Rother saved eight shot attempts in the game, conceding the only goal after making the initial save.
Rother has cemented herself as one of the top goalkeepers in the conference nearing the end of her second season. She leads the Big Ten in saves per game (5.69) and ranks third in save percentage (.740). With three games remaining in the regular season, Rother has made 91 saves with two complete shutouts.
On Tuesday, Rother also received the Big Ten conference's Defensive Player of the Week award for the second consecutive week. In those four games over a two-week span, Rother tallied 32 saves with just four goals conceded.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday, October 21 in their only single-game weekend of the season, at home versus Ohio State. The game will set off at 3:00 p.m. ET and air online at BTN2Go.com. Prior to the start of the game, Indiana will recognize their 2016 senior class—Kate Barber, Morgan Dye, Malia Fujisawa, and Mollie Getzfread—before they take the turf for the final home game of their career.
