BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After hosting the Hoosier Classic in September, the Indiana women's tennis team is back at it with the ITA Ohio Valley Regional and the IU Regional this weekend. The ITA Regional Championships will be held at Middle Tennessee State in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Traveling to the ITA Ohio Valley Regional in Murfreesboro, Tenn., will be seniors Paula Gutierrez and Kim Schmider and sophomore Madison Appel. Appel and Schmider, who won the doubles title at the Hoosier Classic will be partners again at the ITA Regional. Those not traveling to Tennessee for the ITA Regional will be playing in the IU Regional for the Hoosiers.
This season marks Lin Loring's 40th year as the head coach of the Hoosiers and 44th overall. His 846 career wins are the most ever by any coach in Division-I women's tennis history.
"We are trying to improve technique and shot selection in the fall," Loring said. "Every girl has individual things they are working on in practice and we want to see those things carry into competition."
The 2016-17 Indiana lineup has two seniors in Paula Gutierrez and Kim Schmider. The trio of Madison Appel, Caitlin Bernard and Natalie Whalen return for their sophomore seasons. Alicia Robinson is a graduate student and in her first year with the Hoosiers. The freshmen class includes Pauline Jahren, Emma Love and Anna McCoy.
The fall schedule is the time to figure out how all of the new players will fit within the scheme. Loring will use this to determine who the doubles pairings will be for dual matches in the spring. This low-key portion of the schedule is a great opportunity for the players to prove themselves both in singles and doubles.
In October the Hoosiers play in the ITA Ohio Valley and also host the IU Regional for teams and athletes that are not participating in the ITA Ohio Valley. The Hoosiers will close the fall with the Western Michigan Invite on Nov. 4-6 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
After the holiday break, the Hoosiers will pick up again in January with the IU Winter Invite. This tournament will have Marquette, ACU, Colorado and Utah to join Indiana.
The Hoosiers will start dual match play with home matches against Western Michigan and Butler on Jan. 21. The Indiana schedule features 18 home dual matches throughout the winter and spring. This will lead up to the Big Ten Tournament, which is scheduled for April 27-30 in Lincoln, Neb., hosted by Nebraska.
