Kevin Wilson: Northwestern Preview
10/20/2016 5:10:00 PM | Football
On the team's preparation for Northwestern this week…
"We had a lot of things we needed to correct coming off our last game. We need a lot more consistency on offense, on defense there are some critical stops we need to make. It's been kind of a normal routine, the kids came in with the right attitude on Sunday, they saw some good football, some things they need to work on, and we were back at it. We've had three good days of practice and we'll need to finish strong because going on the road and winning games is tough. And we are playing a veteran team that is playing good football, so it's going to be a tough challenge. Like the practice, tough challenge, have to get there by Saturday."
On preparing for a very confident team…
"No doubt. And I think our team is gaining some confidence as well. We've had some victories and we've also let some slip away against some good teams. The way they have played on the road, and they've had an open date in there as well, Pat (Fitzgerald) has always done a great job, great coaching staff, it's a program that's won, they've got quality players. They are playing good in all three phases. You don't go on the road and get Iowa and Michigan State a lot, you don't get them back-to-back, and you don't get them the way they did. They played strong football. It's going to be a strong challenge for us."
On the key to solving the challenges the Northwestern defense brings…
"Like a lot of teams, they are big up front. They got a lot of really good linebackers. They are very well coached in what they are going to do. They are very sound. They don't give up a lot of cheap plays. They make you earn what you get. Our offense has played well, but we leave some things out there. We get a little off, a penalty, a missed block, missed execution gets us behind the chains. We will move the ball sometimes and not get points to show. We are going to need points. You need touchdowns to win. That's what Northwestern has done to win on the road. Not only have they played well, they've scored touchdowns and they've gotten points. That will be the challenge for us. Can we score? Our offense has played well but really good offenses score touchdowns. We will have to work hard to get in the end zone."
