BLOOMINGTON, IND. – Following the Nebraska game, Indiana's offensive coordinator Kevin Johns spoke on the problems that occurred in the loss, the lack of execution and what he expects in Northwestern this upcoming Saturday.
"We're having one guy breakdown at the wrong time, instead of being just a well-oiled machine that is clicking on all cylinders, right now we're not clicking on all cylinders." Johns said. "It's not that everything is broken, but there's just one or two missing pieces it seems like at the wrong time - time and time again and that's what we're trying to get fixed."
The key to fixing this kind of problem for the Hoosiers falls on a few factors in Johns mind.
"It's coaching. It's just attention to detail. It's increasing your sense of urgency. It's the little things. I don't know if it's anything physically, I don't know that it's anything schematically. I think that it's just mentally doing the right things and being prepared and executing when you're called upon." Johns said.
The highlights from the Hoosiers offense start with the ongoing improvement of the running game.
"(I see) just a stronger desire, just a sense of urgency to know that we're not playing the standard we need to. I know those guys are disappointed and I know they have a ton of pride." Johns said. "We've been running the ball here for a long time really well and we're going back to that level and we have the right guys to do it."
When the Hoosiers needed a spark during their Homecoming game last weekend, junior quarterback Zander Diamont provided his skill set.
"I think we've seen that Zander has a skill set that Richard (Lagow) doesn't have and can bring something different to the table. For us, I don't know if it's a full-time thing, maybe some situational things during the game." Johns said. "Rich is a different quarterback than Zander is, there are different tweaks we can do with with Zander that we wouldn't do with Rich and vice versa."
For Johns and the Hoosiers, it's not getting easier, first it was Michigan State, then it was Ohio State, then it was Nebraska, now the test resides in Northwestern.
"They are a sound group. (Defensive coordinator Mike) Hankwitz does a phenomenal job. They are aggressive, they are downhill, they're a very strong group, play with their hands extremely well. Eye discipline is very good and it's been that way for a long time since Coach Hankwitz has been there. He's literally been the guy that has turned that defense around by himself and he has the utmost respect from everyone on our staff. A lot of guys have worked with him before." Johns said. "They're good. It's another tough challenge."
