ROSEMONT, Ill. – Indiana Women's Basketball has been selected to finish third in the Big Ten in 2016-17 and junior guard Tyra Buss was named a preseason All-Big Ten selection in vote by league coaches and media and announced on Monday.
The Hoosiers were picked to finish third both the coaches and the media Big Ten polls, as they tied with Michigan State in the coaches preseason ranking. It marks the highest projected finish by the Hoosiers in the preseason poll in program history.
"This preseason ranking serves as a reminder of the strides our program made a year ago," IU head coach Teri Moren said "However, we are not thinking about the past. We're focused on the next challenge as our program is still in the early stages of growth. We feel like we're moving in the right direction, but there is still much work to be done. The daily goal is the same and that's to be better than what we were the day before."
Indiana is coming off one of its most successful seasons in program history, where it earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, reaching the second round. They finished with 21 wins last season, tying the most in a single season in program history. IU also picked up its first win in the NCAA Tournament with its first-round victory over Georgia. The Hoosiers finished fourth in the 2015-16 Big Ten standings, finishing 12-6 overall in league play.
The Hoosiers return all five starters from last year's success, including Buss and All-Big Ten honorable mention Amanda Cahill (14.7 ppg., 8.5 rpg., 49.7% 3FG). Big Ten Coach of the Year Teri Moren returns for her third season at the helm of the IU program.
Two-time Big Ten champion Maryland was tabbed to win the league while Ohio State was picked second, respectively in both polls.
Junior guard Tyra Buss was selected as an All-Big Ten selection and is a unanimous selection by the league's coaches. The Mt. Carmel, Ill. native returns as IU's leading scorer from a season ago, as she averaged 18.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.1 steals en route to All-Big Ten First Team honors.
Buss also holds a 37-game consecutive scoring streak headed into the new season and also hit 203 free throws as a sophomore, the sixth-most in a single season in program history. In her first two seasons at Indiana, Buss has scored 982 points – just 18 shy of hitting her 1,000th point of her career.
Indiana will be featured in part of the league's Women's Basketball Digital Week on the Big Ten Network on Wednesday, October 26 with interviews from Coach Moren and Buss to be aired on the network.
IU will play its lone exhibition game on Sunday, November 6 when UIndy visits newly renovated Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall at 2 p.m. The regular season tips off at home on November 11 when Presbyterian visits Bloomington at 7 p.m.
