BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Leading up to Saturday's matchup with the 5-2 Maryland Terrapins, Indiana offensive coordinator Kevin Johns spoke about how close the Hoosiers are to fixing things, ending slow starts and the return of Dan Feeney.
Every down, every inch matters in football and Johns believes that's how far off the Hoosiers are from being more successful.
"Those inches are adding up and they're killing us right now. If we can just find a way to get on, not the same page, but just find a way to close that gap, to clean up our execution in certain areas, we are going to be a lot better." Johns said. "It's never as bad as you think, never as good as you think, but we can be so much better if we could just execute a little tighter."
That execution that Johns is referencing begins right from the first snap of the game, making the overall offensive performance suffer.
"Unfortunately, I don't know that I can pick one reason other than, like I said, the second play of the game, we had a guy wide open, the throw was a little high, the receiver should of gone up and got it. So, instead of having that fast start that we're looking for there, we go three-and-out and now everything's off by just a little bit." Johns said. "As coaches, we're going to have to find ways to get us going earlier, whether it's play-calling, whether it's our energy, execution. I don't know that it's one thing, but I certainly think it's something we have to get fixed."
Indiana received great news when fifth-year senior right guard Dan Feeney made his return last Saturday for his first game since the second week of the season.
"I think it's great to have Dan back. He's a great player, a great leader. I think for Danny, we're still trying to get him back in game mode. That was his first game back and he played maybe half the game, a little bit more. We're still trying to knock the rust off there," Johns said. "For us, we're going to do what we do, but having him out there is a great asset."
IU gets the opportunity to turn those little mistakes into big opportunities when they face off with the Terrapins at 3:30 pm on Saturday.
"I see a defense that is going to challenge every single play. They're going to load up the box and stop the run. They are a one high safety defense; they're going to challenge every throw in the perimeter," Johns said. "Like a lot of good defenses in this league, there aren't a lot of things easy against these guys. I think they're athletic. I think they run really well. They're playing extremely hard, with lot of confidence. For us, it's going to be a great challenge."
