BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer redshirt senior defender Marissa Borschke has been named to the Third Team All-Big Ten, while forward Macy Miller has been voted to the All-Freshman Team, the conference announced today. The recognitions, which are voted on by the Big Ten coaches, are the first for Indiana since 2013.
Also earning accolades from the conference was junior Kylie Kirk, who was named Indiana's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Borschke has played every minute of the 2016 season in the back. In addition, she has netted a pair of goals – on a penalty kick in Indiana's 2-2 draw with No. 24 Rutgers and on the game-winner at Maryland on Oct. 16.
The Burlington, Ontario native has made 74 starts in her IU career, tied for eighth in program history.
"Marissa has been the backbone of the backline for the last four years," said head coach Amy Berbary. "I'm just so proud and excited for her to finally reap the benefits of her hard work and dedication to this program. Backs don't usually get their names in the paper of get the glory but we wouldn't have had the success we've had this season without her back there."
Miller, a native of Carmel, Ind., has played in all 19 games for the Hoosiers and has put up 18 shots, with eight being on target, which is the most for IU's freshmen and third most on the team. An impressive run by Miller down the right flank against Wisconsin on Sept. 25 earned the Hoosiers the corner kick that set up Cassidy Blacha's game-winning goal. Two games later, she was fouled on a breakaway against Rutgers, resulting in Borschke's penalty kick.
"She's exceeded our expectations and her own," said Berbary. "She's been huge for us as far as coming into the games and really making an impact very quickly. She's had limited minutes but has been very impactful in giving us that spark that we needed."
Kirk, a native of Haddonfield, N.J., has made 17 starts on the season in the backfield. The 14 student-athletes chosen as Sportsmanship honorees are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
