10/28/2016 10:17:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Megan Tallman became the Indiana volleyball all-time leader in career assists in the rally scoring era, but the Hoosiers came up short in a three set match (25-23, 25-16, 25-22) against No. 15 Michigan State on Friday at University Gym.
Tallman, who had not played since the Hoosiers match against Wisconsin on Oct. 1 due to an injury, did not start, but came into the match in the first set. The first play she came in, Tallman went back to the service line and served up one of the Hoosiers eight aces in the match.
Later in the first set, Tallman put up a set to redshirt freshman Kendall Beerman, who connected for a kill to give Tallman 3,501 career assists to break the previous record of 3,500 career assists. Tallman finished the match with 10 assists to push her total to 3,509.
Tallman's record setting assist tied the first set, 8-8, one of 15 ties in the opening set as the Hoosiers (14-10, 3-8) battled against the Spartans.
With the first set tied 22-22, freshman Meaghan Koors was brought in to serve. Koors did her job and served up an ace to put Indiana up a point. Michigan State tied the set 23-23 and two Indiana attack errors gave MSU the first set, 25-23.
In the second set the Hoosiers lowered their attack errors from eight to three, but connected on nine kills compared to 16 by the Spartans (18-5, 7-4). With the second set tied 8-8, the Spartans went on an 9-2 run to open up a 17-10 lead.
The Hoosiers rallied to score four straight points to cut the lead to 17-14, but the Spartans finished the set with eight of the last 10 points to take a 25-16 set win and build a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final set the Hoosiers stayed with Michigan State and both teams traded points to a 20-20 tie.
Michigan State took advantage of a pair of Indiana errors and scored three points in a row to take a 23-20 lead and win the match with a 25-22 set win.
Senior Taylor Lebo moved in ninth on the Hoosiers all-time list for career digs in the match and now has 1,038 for her career.
Up next the Hoosiers will host No. 13 Michigan on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at University Gym.
