BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana football players and coaches met with the media Monday for the Hoosiers' weekly press conference leading into Saturday's noon kickoff at Rutgers.
Each week we will compile five quotes and storylines recapping the previous game and previewing the upcoming one.
Head coach Kevin Wilson: "We are looking at them this year and we are evaluating our team this week. It is not a revenge game. To me, every year, every game, every team, every week is different."
Rutgers is in their first season with head coach Chris Ash. With a new coach comes a different team, a new offensive scheme and a different defensive philosophy. The coaches will prepare for the team they will face off against in Piscataway this weekend, not the one that downed the Hoosiers in Bloomington in 2015.
Junior tailback Devine Redding: "The statistics are really nice, but you really have to thank the guys up front that created the holes for me. The offensive line has been playing their tails off, and we changed our mindset. We were ready to come back and get the ball rolling again."
Indiana's rushing game broke out in a big way against Maryland. Three different Hoosiers notched at least 100 yards on the ground. Redding carried 17 times and gained 134 yards with a touchdown. True freshman Tyler Natee bulldozed his way for 111 yards on 18 carries and a TD. Junior quarterback Zander Diamont cruised to 104 yards on 11 carries and two scores.
Defensive coordinator Tom Allen: "I think [Rescigno] throws the ball really well. That gives them a dimension that they really need to have. It forces you, as a defense, to not gang up and sell out to stop the run. He gives them the ability to hit the big play, but he has also shown the ability to run the ball."
Rutgers has made a quarterback change, replacing Chris Laviano with Giovanni Rescigno. Rescigno, a redshirt sophomore, has established himself within the Rutgers rushing attack, gaining 105 yards on 24 carries, including a 42-yard touchdown scamper, and has thrown for 340 yards and four TDs in three games (1 start).
Coach Wilson: "Going on the road is hard. Winning Big Ten games is hard. And we had some things Saturday that if we don't fix and take out of our football will haunt us. It will be a strong challenge. And looking forward to a good week and seeing if we can get better and keep moving forward."
The Scarlet Knights are 2-6 and 0-5 in Big Ten play. Coach Ash came from Ohio State, where he oversaw one of the top defenses in the country. Rutgers has won both matchups against Indiana, with one victory in Piscataway.
Junior defensive back Tony Fields: "We are consistently making great plays. I am very proud of my brothers in the defensive backs room, and I am proud of the way we are playing. We are playing with great effort. But, we have not met our maximum potential yet, so that is exciting, but we have to find ways throughout the week to continue to get better."
IU is holding opponents to 395.0 total yards per game, an improvement of 114.5 from last season, the third-largest improvement in the country. Indiana has held its foes to 92.8 fewer passing yards (2nd nationally) and 11.1 fewer points (8th). The Hoosiers are tied for second in the Big Ten in defensive touchdowns (2, T-18th nationally), tied for fourth in interceptions (8, T-43rd) and fumbles recovered (5), and tied for fifth in takeaways (13).
