BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A select few of the Indiana University men's tennis team are making an impact at the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships. Some of the team not competing at the All-American Championships, will travel to Notre Dame this weekend for the Bobby Bayliss Invitational.
In Tulsa, sophomore Afonso Salgado, junior Keivon Tabrizi, freshman Bennett Crane, junior Raheel Manji, and sophomore Antonio Cembellin are competing in the ITA Men's All-American Championships.
Salgado started off the tournament with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 win over Austin Robles of Arkansas in the pre-qualifying bracket. Salgado's tournament ended with a loss to Vitor Mendes of Wichita State.
Tabrizi began in the round of 256 and propelled all the way to the round of 32 with wins over players from Liberty, Loyola Marymount, and Northwestern before falling to Srdjan Jakovljevic of Tennessee.
The youngest of the bunch, Bennett Crane, was ousted in his first match of the pre-qualifying draw in three sets.
Manji was eliminated from the singles qualifying draw after one match, Cembellin lost a tight match in the main singles draw but they both recovered to play with each other in the main doubles draw.
Manji and Cembellin lost in straight sets to the pair from Georgia Tech in the opening match.
Tomorrow, Manji and Cembellin will play in the back draw together, Cembellin again will play at singles.
The rest of the Hoosiers are traveling to South Bend for the Bobby Bayliss Invitational at Notre Dame.
This tournament will consist of three flights of singles and two flights of doubles. Players will play within their flights, but can advance to higher flights if they achieve success.
