KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Indiana Women's Soccer has been recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) with the Team Academic Award for the fifth consecutive year, the organization announced on Thursday.
The award, which encompasses the 2015-16 school calendar, is given to teams with a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the entire academic year. IU more than exceeded that mark, posting above a 3.5 GPA in a school year that saw the Women's Soccer program earn the Herbert Cup both semesters, an award given to the Indiana team with the highest semester GPA.
"Our team continually puts in an extraordinary amount of time and energy into the classroom and it shows," said head coach Amy Berbary.
The Hoosiers also earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
"Kayla Smith served as our academic captain last year and was instrumental in working with academic advisor Eileen O'Rourke in fostering an environment of competition and support in the classroom," said Berbary. "Everyone contributed to this award and I couldn't be more proud."
In addition, Indiana is one of just 222 schools in the country to have both the women's and men's programs earn this award.
