HONOLULU - The Indiana Hoosiers men's basketball team learned why it is such an honor to participate in the State Farm Armed Forces Classic. Along with Kansas, Michigan State and Arizona, each team enjoyed a full day of activities which served as a fantastic learning experience for all involved.
"It is humbling to meet the men and women who serve our county and even more of an honor to spend time with them like we have thus far on our trip," said senior Collin Hartman.
Following breakfast and a film session, the Hoosiers official traveling party boarded their team bus and returned to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam where they would spend the entire day. IU was treated with a Galley Lunch at the Silver Dolphin Bistro on the base where they dispersed and sat with the servicemen and women who were enjoying their lunch.
The team met individuals from all of the country and those with Indiana ties were not shy about sharing their love for the Hoosiers.
"It was really nice to meet so many people, but you really felt the love whenever you got a chance to get to know someone from the Hoosier state," said junior James Blackmon, Jr. "They take a lot of pride in being from the state and you could sense how much it meant to them.
After an hour in the bistro, the team got back on the bus and held an open practice at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Fitness Center. The group worked out for about two hours and also got to meet the many ESPN personalities who will cover this opening day event. The Hoosiers were joined by Dan Shulman, Jay Bilas, and Molly McGrath who will call the game action. Shulman and McGrath will also be part of the Tuesday Night Big Ten telecasts which begin on January 3rd when the Hoosiers host Wisconsin.
The ESPN College Gameday crew also had the opportunity to stop by including Karl Ravech, Seth Greenberg, Andy Katz and Jay Williams. ESPN has been following all the teams and will have behind the scenes footage on Gameday which begins at 6:30 p.m., Eastern. Arizona and Michigan State will tip at 7 p.m., Eastern and the Hoosiers and Jayhawks will tip-off 30 minutes following the completion of the first game.
Following practice, the Hoosiers changed and were taken to the Pearl Harbor Visitor's Center where it first watched a film on the history of the site and the attacks which occurred on December 7, 1941. With the 75th Anniversary coming up in the next few weeks, both Indiana and Kansas travel parties shared a boat where it was given a personalized tour of the entire area, including a walking tour of the USS Arizona.
"This is something that you will remember for the rest of your life," said junior Robert Johnson. "It was a moving experience and I'm glad we got the opportunity to do this."
The events concluded in the early evening with the Hoosiers and Jayhawks hosting a youth clinic at the base's fitness center with the boys and girls of the residents of the base.
"When you see the smiles on the faces of the families who are stationed here at the base, you are honored to have this experience," said IIU Coach Tom Crean. "It was a phenomenal day to be a part of."
