Five Hoosiers Earn All-Region Honors

MADISON, Wisc. – Indiana entered the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet hoping to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships meet next weekend in Terre Haute. The men's team will have to wait another day to learn its fate.
The men's team finished third with 91 points after falling to Michigan State via the tiebreaker rules of the meet. Four members of the men's team took home All-Region honors for top 25 finishes. Matt Schwartzer was the top finisher, taking fourth with a time of 30:23.7. Jason Crist took sixth with a time of 30:25.9. Freshman Ben Veatch finished 19th and Bryce Millar was 23rd, both earning All-Region. Finishing out the scoring was Mark Chandler, who finished 28th.
Head coach Ron Helmer was pleased with the way the team was able to execute the race plan in which they had put in.
The top two teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Championships meet. The remainder of the field is selected from a pool searching for an at-large bid. The announcement for the at-large bids will be made around 3:00 p.m. tomorrow.
If the team does not qualify for the meet, Schwartzer and Crist would earn automatic bids to run as individuals next weekend in the NCAA Championships.
The women's team was led by All-Region performer Katherine Receveur. Katherine backed up her runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships with a third place finish. She ran a 19:56.1. Brenna Calder finished 38th and Corinne Cominator took 50th. Maggie Allen crossed 78th and Hannah Stoffel took 99th to round out the Hoosier scoring.
Receveur earned an automatic bid to run as an individual in the NCAA Championships. Her third place finish is the best finish for an IU runner since Zachary Mayhew was the runner-up in 2012. The highest finish for a female runner was Wendi Robinson was fourth in the 2008 meet.
The NCAA Championships will be run next Saturday in Terre Haute. The women's race will start at 11:00 a.m. followed by the men's race at noon.
