Three Hoosiers to Compete in NCAA Championships
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Three Hoosiers have qualified for the NCAA Championships as individuals. Katherine Receveur will represent IU in the women's race. Jason Crist and Matt Schwartzer will both run for the Hoosiers in the men's race.
Despite a record of 82-8 (4-8 against ranked opponents) for the men's team, the Hoosiers were not selected as an at-large bid for the championship meet. The selection process is based on a strict formula based on head-to-head races during the regular season.
The men's team closed out the season placing third at the Big Ten Championships meet behind All-Big Ten First-Team selections, Crist and Schwartzer. Ben Veatch also ran exceptionally well, garnering Second-Team honors and collecting unanimous Big Ten Freshman of the Year accolades.
The final team meet of the season came in Madison as part of the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet. The Hoosiers took third, after falling to conference-rival Michigan State via the rigid tie-breaker rules, in one of the more highly competitive regionals in the nation. Schwartzer finished fourth individually, Crist was sixth to earn spots in the NCAA Championships meet.
The women's team is littered with young talent that performed well throughout the season. The team finished with a respectable record of 71-29. The last two meets of the season saw the Hoosiers finish eighth at the Big Ten Championships and ninth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet.
Receveur showed immense grit and toughness in both meets. At the Big Ten Championships she battled through the rolling hills of the Minnesota course to finish as the runner-up, over 60 spots better than her finish a season ago. She carried this momentum into a third place individual finish in the regional meet.
