No. 23 Indiana Routs Vanderbilt, 94-61, as Buss Reaches 1,000 Career Points

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Junior guard Tyra Buss became the fastest player in school history to score 1,000 points as No. 23 Indiana Women's Basketball picked up its first regular season win over a Southeastern Conference school since 2006 with a rout of Vanderbilt, 94-61, on Sunday afternoon.
A quartet of Hoosiers paved the way for the win – continuing to extend a program-long 16th straight inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall – with senior guard Alexis Gassion tying a career-high 22 points, five rebounds and three assists. Junior forward Amanda Cahill added 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting while grabbing six rebounds. Buss (11 points) and senior guard Amber Deane (10 points) helped IU stuff the stat sheet as they scored the fourth-most points (94) under third year head coach Teri Moren.
It's also the first time in the regular season that IU has defeated an SEC opponent since it defeated then-No. 21/24 Kentucky, 54-51, in Lexington. Previously, Indiana defeated SEC foe Georgia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 2015-16.
Senior forward Jenn Anderson came off the bench to lead IU, who improved to 2-0 on the young season, on the glass with seven rebounds as Indiana narrowly won the rebounding margin, 36-34. Inside play was big again for Indiana, who scored 48 points in the paint in the win and scored 30 second-chance points.
Also coming off the bench, senior guard Karlee McBride and redshirt sophomore Tia Elbert each chipped in eight points as they helped IU shoot 52.4 percent overall from the floor. They increased their field goal percentage in each quarter, including a 71.4 percent clip in the fourth to close out the win.
Indiana combined for 19 assist on 33 made shots on the afternoon, led by five each from Buss and Elbert. IU also forced the Commodores (1-1) to commit 22 turnovers while picking up 12 team steals led by Cahill's five.
Controlling the ball from the opening tip, Gassion hit her first points of the afternoon as she drew the foul and sank the plus one just twenty seconds into the game. After a McBride 3-pointer put the Hoosiers up by six, Vanderbilt came racing back with back-to-back bucket to tie things up, 10-10, with 4:17 to play in the first quarter.
Going on a 6-0 run late in the first, Indiana was on its way to a five-point lead at the break but Elbert drained a 25-footer with the clock expiring of the first ten minutes of play.
Buss hit her 1,000th point the second quarter, making her the fastest IU women's player to reach the mark in school history. She connected on the left-handed transition layup on a feed from Elbert with 9:27 to play. IU would use momentum to take its first double-digit lead of the afternoon on an offensive board and putback from Cahill with 8:05 remaining in the quarter.
Vanderbilt would eventually cut the IU lead back down to four, 35-31, with 4:46 to play but IU was able to extend its lead back to 12 to end the half on layups by Gassion and senior guard Tyshee Towner along with a Cahill 3-pointer. Indiana was fueled by a 50 percent field goal clip in the second quarter as well as it would go up, 50-38, at the break.
Indiana came out of the locker room and opened the third quarter on a 12-0 run, holding VU scoreless for the first five minutes of the frame. The Commodores combined for just 23 second-half points including a game-low 11 in the third quarter.

Head Coach Teri Moren
"I thought it was a really interesting game from the beginning. I kind of anticipated it being physical, but not as physical as it got. I thought our kids weathered through that storm and adjusted. One of the things that we went into this game, we had a pretty solid game plan, throughout we had to make some adjustments. I have to give our kids a tremendous amount of credit, amount of praise for being able to adjust on the fly. From some of our bench players, Tia Elbert really stuck out as someone who was sound on defense and really gave us a lift off the bench. We scored 94 points, a lot of different players in the categories of points today. I love the fact that we have 19 assist on 33 field goals. Give our kids credits, this was a big game for us, we tried to prepare them for this SEC opponent. It's only a matter of time, (Vanderbilt Head Coach) Stephanie (White) is the right person for that job and she's going to do a tremendous job. She brings in her players and they get accustomed to her system and the way she wants to play."
On her 1,000 career point…
Junior guard Tyra Buss
"I was told before the game started I was three points away, so I knew when I hit that I had passed 1,000 points. It's a great honor to be the fastest as a junior, but I wouldn't be here without my teammates."
When asked about what changed in the scoring drive during second quarter…
Junior forward Amanda Cahill
"I think we really stepped up our defense a little bit and I think that lead to offense where we were able to get some baskets in transition. That's what we practice every single day and I think that really showed today."
