BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Junior guard Tyra Buss posted her second-straight 20-plus scoring performance as three players scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as No. 23 Indiana Women's Basketball dropped its first contest of the season to Western Kentucky, 85-74.
Buss's team-high 24 points paced the Hoosiers on Saturday afternoon as she also added three assists and two rebounds. Senior guard Alexis Gassion finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists while junior forward Amanda Cahill added 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Senior forward Jenn Anderson came off the bench for another solid performance as she led with a game-high and tied a career-high 11 rebounds and added nine points while senior guard Amber Deane chipped in eight points.
Indiana (3-1) shot under 50 percent for the first time as a team this season, recording a 41.2 percent clip from the floor. Turnovers also proved costly as it committed 12 turnovers, nine of which came in the first half, as those miscues led to 15 points for the Hilltoppers on the afternoon.
On the boards, IU held the 42-31 advantage in the end as it picked up 21 of those on the offensive glass. However, they shot just 65 percent from the free throw line (13-for-20) and just 25 percent (5-for-20) from 3-point range in the loss.
It was a sloppy first quarter – and first half - for the Hoosiers, who committed five turnovers before the end of the first ten minutes. Indiana came out with an early 5-2 with 6:43 to play after Cahill was fed by senior guard Karlee McBride to get the bucket and one. Buss kept IU up by three but a deep three near the IU bench by Western Kentucky's Jayee Cole knotted the game at 9-9.
The Hilltoppers (2-1) went up by three with 2:31 to play as they capitalized on a IU miscue. A nicely executed in-bounds play led to an Anderson bucket and put Indiana up 17-14 at the end of the first quarter. IU led by as many as seven to open the second quarter as Cahill dished one of her five assists in the half to Anderson, making it a 23-16 advantage with 8:52 to play. WKU used back-to-back buckets to cut the lead back to three before Buss drained a three from the left wing with 5:59 remaining before half.
Western Kentucky tied the score at the media timeout, using a 6-2 run and a 28-28 ballgame with 4:02 to play. Indiana would go the final 2:23 of the second quarter without a field goal and faced its first halftime deficit of the season, 34-30.
Opening play in the third quarter, Indiana came out strong with back-to-back buckets by Buss and Gassion to go up one. An offensive board by sophomore forward Kym Royster at the 8:08 mark led to a putback and a 37-37 tie. WKU would then go on to rattle off a 7-0 run before McBride could respond with a three-pointer from the right wing with 6:29 to play.
The closest Indiana would come to staging a comeback happened late in the third quarter when it came within five on a pair of Deane free throws with 2:09 to play. They trailed 63-56 at the end of the third quarter but shooting just 25 percent in the final frame hindered the ranked Hoosiers who eventually fell behind by as many as 15 early in the fourth quarter.
Indiana returns home to welcome UMass Lowell on Wednesday afternoon at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET and will be live on BTN Plus.
