Indiana earns multiple first-teamers for first time in 2009
ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday their selections to the 2016 All-Big Ten teams. Senior Kate Barber and sophomore Noëlle Rother achieved first team status, and fifth-year senior Mollie Getzfread earned a selection to the All-Big Ten second team. Indiana was one of four teams with two players on the first team, a distinction the Hoosiers last earned in 2009.
Barber becomes the sixth Hoosier in program history to receive multiple first-team honors, adding to an already superlative senior season. Last weekend at No. 6 Penn State, Barber scored two goals and set new single-season records for goals (18) and total points (40). It's Barber's second career All-Conference honor, having earned a unanimous first team selection last year.
To date, Barber is one of the most prolific scorers in Indiana history. She currently ranks fourth on Indiana's all-time goals (28) and points (70) leaderboards. Barber's scoring pace through the first half of the season led all NCAA Division-I players, converting 15 goals in Indiana's first 10 games (1.5 goals/game). And earlier this week, Barber earned a selection to the 2016 NFHCA Division I Senior game, set to take place on Saturday, November 19 during championship weekend.
Rother receives the unique distinction of becoming Indiana's second-ever goalkeeper named to the All-Big Ten first team, joining three-time first team honoree Haley Exner (2005, '06, '07). The sophomore has been one of the conference's best between the pipes all season, ranking second in the Big Ten's save average (5.71/game) and third in save percentage (.746).
Rother has done more than most in nearly two seasons with Indiana. Last year as a freshman, she racked up three Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards along with a Defensive Player of the Week , before being named to the All-Big Ten second team and the NFHCA's All-West Region second team. This year, Rother took home back-to-back Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors alongside a Division-I Defensive Player of the Week award from the NFHCA. Rother's career save percentage (.733) ranks fourth on Indiana's all-time leaderboard, and her goals against average (1.65) ranks second.
For Getzfread, the second team recognition is the first Big Ten athletic accolade of her five-year career. It's well-deserved, too, as Getzfread's contribution on the field often slips through the stats on the box score.
But that's not the case this season. Getzfread shares the team's assists lead with Maddie Latino at eight apiece, as both have been crucial on Indiana's penalty corner unit. Getzfread also scored her first career goal in the Hoosiers' win over New Hampshire, and added a defensive save to her statistics in the game at No. 2 Syracuse. On Thursday, Getzfread is expected to make her 55th career start, and her 74th career appearance. The latter figure is tied for the fourth-highest total in program history.
Indiana begins their Big Ten Tournament campaign on Thursday, November 3, with a quarterfinal matchup at Penn State. It's the first time in IU history that they face their final conference opponent of the regular season in their first round of the postseason. The match is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. ET at Maryland's Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, and will air live on BTN2Go.com.
