No. 4 Indiana Takes Down Akron, 1-0, in NCAA Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 4-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the No. 23-ranked Akron Zips, 1-0, in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 12-1-7 on the season overall, while Akron's season comes to an end with a mark of 13-6-3.
Senior Billy McConnell scored the match winner for IU in the 54th minute off an assist from Tanner Thompson. In goal, Indiana goalkeeper Christian Lomeli made three saves in registering his fourth shutout of the season.
With the victory, the Hoosiers have now reached the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the 36th time in program history and for the fifth time under head coach Todd Yeagley.
IU is now 85-30-4 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, posting a winning percentage of .731. The 85 victories and tournament winning percentage rank first in NCAA history. With the victory, Indiana remains unbeaten at Armstrong Stadium with a record of 8-0-3 mark on the season.
In the first half, shots were even at 7-7, but the Hoosiers had the better of the scoring opportunities. Austin Panchot played very well and had a pair of chances at goal, while Andrew Gutman had a screamer of an attempt go just wide in the first 45 minutes.
After a scoreless first half, IU found the breakthrough in the 54th minute. On a corner kick, Thompson sent a great ball in to the 18-yard box, finding the head of McConnell. The senior's effort deflected off an Akron defender, leaving the Zips' goalie no chance at stopping the score. McConnell notched his third goal of the season, with Thompson recording his third assist of the year.
Akron went on the attack after falling behind, but the IU defense remained stout, not allowing the Zips to find the equalizer.
