BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana football players and coaches met with the media Monday for the Hoosiers' weekly press conference leading into Saturday's noon kickoff vs. Purdue.
Fifth-year senior linebacker Dawson Fletcher: "We played tremendously hard, which is the basis for any great defense. We played our keys right, it just came down to a couple of plays. When you play top notch talent one mistake can cost you the game."
Indiana went toe-to-toe with No. 3 Michigan this past Saturday. The Hoosiers held the high-powered Wolverines offense to 20 points, 59 passing yards and 284 total yards.
Head coach Kevin Wilson: "Going back to the Michigan game last week, defensively some guys we thought played well. It was a tough game. Our guys really battled. We have got another strong test here this week playing a rival."
For the fifth time this season this feisty Hoosiers team stood up to the challenge of a ranked foe and gave them everything they could handle. IU has met four top 10 opponents for the first time in program history. Each game has been intensely fought. This weekend Indiana and Purdue will meet for the Old Oaken Bucket.
Defensive coordinator Tom Allen: "They have connected on everybody. Yancey is a big receiver with great ball skills. Blough, the quarterback, is very talented. He has an NFL arm. It will be a tough challenge for us."
Purdue has been prolific on offense behind the right arm of David Blough. The talented, young gunslinger averages 285 yards per game through the air and has thrown 23 touchdowns.
DeAngelo Yancey, the six-foot-two-inch wideout, leads the Boilermakers in receptions (43), yards (873) and touchdowns (9). The senior has home run potential, averaging over 20.3 yards per catch.
Fifth-year senior offensive lineman Jacob Bailey: "We have to come in with a mindset that we are going to run the football. It is a rivalry game, and it is going to be a fight. One of the ways you judge the physicality of a football game is how the teams run the ball. We will come in with a mindset to run the ball."
Indiana's offense will look to get back to the ground-and-pound attack. IU averages 230 rushing yards per game in wins compared to just 93 rushing yards in losses. The Hoosiers boast a record of 4-1 in games where at least one player reaches the century mark.
Coach Wilson: "I love them to death. It is a great group of guys who are going to be very, very successful. It is a good group, and they have set a pretty good standard."
Aside from playing for the Old Oaken Bucket, Saturday's contest represents Senior Day for a talented group playing in front of the Memorial Stadium fans for the final time. Indiana will honor its seniors prior to the game.
