BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Prior to Indiana football's regular season finale vs. the Purdue Boilermakers, Hoosiers offensive coordinator Kevin Johns spoke with the media regarding the Old Oaken Bucket Game, his wide receivers and recruiting.
"Every kid, when you play in the Indiana vs. Purdue game you know what's on the line," Johns said. "The records are out the door. It's going to be one-on-one battles for four quarters.
I know our kids are excited and I'm sure Purdue is, too."
With the season winding down, it means Johns and the Hoosiers only have a couple of more opportunities to coach seniors like Ricky Jones and Mitchell Paige. In their careers at IU, they have combined for 2,980 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns.
"I'm not sure I can put a value on it," Johns said. "To me, it's not only the plays they make on the field but the leadership they provide in my room. It's those guys who can say, when a young kid comes in the room as a true freshman, to say 'listen. here's how we go about our business, here's how we practice, here's how we study film.' Those are things as a coach I can't always do. Those kids have been here. They've learned from when we started off not very good four, five years ago and now we're getting better and more competitive. For those guys to go through that transition is really special and now for them to leave their legacy for these young guys to carry on. I'm extremely proud, extremely grateful and very thankful for what they've done."
Even before this season comes to a close, Johns and the Indiana staff already are preparing for the next line of Hoosiers on the offensive side of the ball.
"I think all positions are going to be addressed," Johns said. "I don't know if I need to single anyone out, but every year we are going to try to take a couple of guys at each spot. Some years you get maybe a little heavier at a certain position than you do others. We're going to have to reload with a lot of numbers and positions and find the best guys that fit what we're trying to do."
