CHANDLER, Ariz. – Indiana field hockey senior Kate Barber received first team All-West Region honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), the organization announced Tuesday. Barber picks up the 15th first team selection in IU history and, after claiming the honor in 2015, she becomes the fifth Hoosier with multiple first team accolades.
Barber played all-out in her final collegiate season, setting Indiana records for single-season goals (18) and single-season points (40). Through the first five weeks of the season, Barber had the fastest scoring pace in the nation, drilling 15 goals in IU's first 10 games.
The NFHCA All-West Region appointment is Barber's fourth honor of her illustrious senior season. For the second time in her career, Barber garnered All-Big Ten first team honors alongside her first-ever All-Big Ten Tournament team selection. The midfielder also took part in the 2016 NFHCA Senior All-Star game on championship weekend in Roanoke, Virginia, marking the third year in a row with a Hoosier in the showcase event.
The St. Louis, Missouri native served as one of Indiana's three captains in the Hoosiers' 2015 and 2016 seasons. Barber tallied 28 career goals (4th-IU history), 70 points (4th-IU history), six game-winners (7th-IU history), and tied Audra Heilman's shot count with 154 (5th-IU history). Barber also has the unique distinction of making the starting lineup in all 71 of her career appearances.
Barber's accolades are numerous. In addition to two All-Big Ten appointments, Barber is twice an Academic All-Big Ten honoree, a two-time NFHCA All-West Region recipient, a NFHCA National Academic Squad selection, and earned 2015 third team All-American honors from the NFHCA and Synapse Sports.
Barber joins elite company as a Hoosier with multiple All-West Region first team selections from the NFHCA: Kayla Bashore (2003-2004), Lydia Schrott (2004-2006), Haley Exner (2006-2007), and Audra Heilman (2013-2014). All five players, including Barber, went on to receive All-American honors from the NFHCA.
The NFHCA plans to release the All-American team next Tuesday, December 6. After being named to her respective All-Region's first team, Barber is eligible for All-American consideration.
