Bloomington, Ind. - IU Athletics today announced that Indiana University alumnus and award winning baritone James Cornelison will be performing "The Star-Spangled Banner" before this Wednesday's men's basketball game against No. 3 North Carolina. Cornelison earned a master's in music from IU's world renowned Jacobs School of Music in 1992, and has since become famous for signing the National Anthem prior to Chicago Blackhawks home games.
"I am really excited to come down to my alma mater and be a part of an Indiana basketball game," said Cornelison. "IU basketball has incredible tradition, longstanding and famous gameday rituals, and some of the most passionate fans in all of sports. It is a thrill to be able to check out some of my old haunts in Bloomington and to perform at such a big game at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall."
"We're so very glad to have Jim back in Bloomington, and excited for the experience IU fans will have on Wednesday night," said Jacobs School of Music Dean Gwyn Richards. "With a Blackhawks game on Tuesday and Thursday, it is so very generous of him to fit this into his schedule."
His rousing rendition of the "The Star-Spangled Banner" has been a permanent part of the Chicago Blackhawks pregame tradition since 2007.
His performances have earned national recognition and have been viewed by millions on social media. Cornelison has won several awards for music including the William Matheus Sullivan Foundation Award, first place in the American Opera Society of Chicago's Vocal Competition, and the George London Foundation Encouragement Grant.
Tip off for Wednesday's IU-UNC game is at 9:15 ET on ESPN. Click here to view the complete preview.
