BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana football players and head coach Tom Allen met with the media Wednesday to discuss the team's upcoming appearance in the Foster Farms Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 28 (8:30 p.m. ET on FOX) against No. 19 Utah.
We compiled five quotes and storylines previewing the upcoming game.
Head coach Tom Allen: "The real challenge is we want to make sure we are being physical. If you let up and are not physical enough, we will not be sharp or crisp come kickoff."
The big question with bowl preparation is always the balancing act required to ensure the players are well rested but mentally sharp heading into the game. Coach Allen believes the key to coming in ready to fight is maintaining the physical nature of the team during practice. By keeping practice habits intact, the staff believes the team will not show signs of fatigue or rust in the game.
Redshirt junior linebacker Marcus Oliver: "Preparation is key. When you step out on the field you have to be able to read your keys and play with discipline. We have to get a feel for what they do."
The Utes offense owns a big, mauling offensive line and will look to pound the ground game. Once the running game is established, they will take their shots through the play-action passing game. The defense will have to play with great discipline to limit the Utah attack.
Coach Allen: "The biggest thing that jumps out to me is their defensive line. They are really talented. They have one guy that has 14.5 sacks, which is right near the top mark in the country. Because of the pressure they apply they have a ton of interceptions as well."
The Utah Utes finished third in the Pac-12 South with a 5-4 record (8-4 overall). The Utes were successful on the backs of their tenacious defense. Utah ranked eighth nationally with 40 sacks and ranked inside the top 10 with 17 interceptions. Hunter Dimick was third nationally iwith 14.5 sacks. Keeping the quarterback, and the football, protected will be a massive key for the Hoosiers.
Fifth-year senior wide receiver Ricky Jones: "There is a lot of excitement at practice, guys are competing."
For the second straight year, the Hoosiers extended their season into December by earning a bowl bid. The team learned from last season's preparation and are taking on a new mantra this year. The practices are shorter in length but are stacked with competitive drills, creating a fun and intense environment.
Junior running back Devine Redding: "Those guys mean a lot to me. They help us and we help them. Congratulations to those guys."
True freshman left tackle Coy Cronk and fifth-year senior offensive lineman Dan Feeney were honored as All-Americans this past week. Cronk was named a Freshman All-American, while Feeney earned first team All-America honors. Both linemen have been instrumental in paving the way for Redding to eclipse 1,000 yards rushing for the second consecutive season.
