IU's Lillard, Thompson Earn All-America Honors
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University men's soccer's Grant Lillard and Tanner Thompson earned All-America honors on Thursday.
Lillard was named Second-Team Best XI by Top Drawer Soccer and was also named Second-Team Scholar All-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Thompson was named Third-Team Best XI by Top Drawer Soccer.
The All-America honor from Top Drawer Soccer is the first for Lillard, who started all 18 matches in which he appeared this season for the Hoosiers. The Hinsdale, Ill. native continued to be one of the best defenders in the nation and also totaled three goals and an assist on the year. Lillard was named First-Team All-Big Ten and First-Team NSCAA All-Midwest Region for the second-straight season.
A stalwart at center back for IU, Lillard helped the Indiana defense record a goals-against average of 0.70 and posted a Big Ten-best 11 shutouts in 2016. Lillard becomes the 40th player to earn All-America honors for the Hoosiers.
Also a standout in the classroom, Lillard is the first IU player to be named an Academic All-American since A.J. Corrado in 2013 from Capital One/CoSIDA. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten honorees, Lillard was also named to the NSCAA Scholar All-North/Central Region Team.
The All-America accolade is the second this season for Thompson, who was also earned first-team honors from the NSCAA earlier this month. Thompson is only the eighth player in Indiana men's soccer history to earn at least three All-America accolades and is the first since Pat Noonan earned his third All-America certificate in 2002. The Loomis, Calif. native earned first-team honors in 2014 and was a third-team honoree by the NSCAA in 2015.
A three-time First-Team All-Region selection, Thompson repeated as Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors for the third-straight season. Thompson had a tremendous year for the Hoosiers, as the senior led the team with 18 points on the strength of eight goals and two assists. Thompson was also clutch for IU, netting four game winners.
