ROSEMONT, Ill. – Junior forward Amanda Cahill has been named the Big Ten Women's Basketball Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
The Clyde, Ohio native is rewarded for her performances at the Florida Sunshine Classic where she averaged a double-double as she guided Indiana to two wins over Florida and Stony Brook. Cahill averaged 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds to go along with 5.5 assists, 2.8 assist to turnover ratio, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks as she averaged 60 percent or better from the field (.609) and 3-point line (.625) in the non-conference finale.
She also became the 26th player in school history to reach 1,000 points in Wednesday's win over Stony Brook as she went 5-for-7 from the floor (.714) and pulled down a season-high 13 rebounds to go along with 14 points and dished out six assists, two steals and two blocks. In the Tuesday win against Florida, Cahill posted her first 20-plus point game of the season with 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds. She shot 56.3 percent from the floor and 60.0 percent from 3-point range (3-for-5) while adding five assists, a steal and a rebound in the win.
The back-to-back double-doubles are also the 23rd and 24th of her career as she now owns six of IU's nine double-doubles scored this season, including four-straight. In addition, Cahill now sits in a tie for sixth in career double-doubles at Indiana, tying Zan Jefferies (1988-91).
Cahill is the first Big Ten Player of the Week for Indiana this season. With junior guard Tyra Buss's selection in 2015-16, the duo combines for weekly honors in back-to-back seasons for the Hoosiers for the first time since the 2007-08 and 2008-09.
Indiana returns to the court on Wednesday when it travels to State College, Pa. for the Big Ten opener at Penn State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and will be live on BTN Plus and heard on IUHoosiers.com
