ROSEMONT, Ill. – Indiana baseball was selected by the Big Ten coaches to finish third in 2016, the league office announced on Wednesday. Conference coaches voted on the top six teams and also selected three student-athletes from their own squads to a Players to Watch list.
Representing the Hoosiers on the list is senior LHP Kyle Hart, junior OF Craig Dedelow and junior RHP Jake Kelzer.
Hart enters his senior season tied for third in IU history with 12 career wins in Big Ten games, while his 3.11 ERA in conference action ranks eighth and 83 strikeouts rank 10th. During the 2015 campaign, he led Indiana with a 1.21 ERA and 5-0 record, appearing in 10 games while starting eight. His team-high fifth win came in the 2015 NCAA Regional opener vs. Radford, recording season bests of 7.0 innings pitched and six strikeouts while limiting the Highlanders to one unearned run.
Dedelow was an All-Big Ten Third Team (OF) selection in 2015 and a Big Ten All-Tournament Team selection. He led Indiana with a .325 batting average, 76 hits (T-10th in Big Ten), 116 total bases (10th), seven home runs (T-10th) and .496 slugging percentage (ninth), while his 37 RBI were tied for first and 23 extra-base hits were tied for second. Dedelow was one of four Hoosiers to start all 59 games (45 at CF, 13 at 1B, 1 at LF).
Indiana's highest selection in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Kelzer was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 14th round (413th overall). He led Indiana with 73.0 innings pitched and was second with 11 starts. Kelzer's 57 strikeouts were second-most for IU in 2015 while his opposing batting average (.237) ranked 10th in Big Ten.
Indiana's first 10 games of the season will be away from home, opening the season with a three-game series at Middle Tennessee beginning on Feb. 19. Last season, Middle Tennessee finished fourth in a very strong Conference USA, posting a 19-11 record in league games.
