TEMPE, Ariz. – Behind two impressive performances by the Indiana pitching staff, the Hoosier softball team swept day two of the Kajikawa Classic, defeating Utah State, 5-2, and Georgia State, 4-1.
Freshman pitcher Josie Wood (1-1) surrendered just three hits and no runs in 5.1 innings of work against Utah State to earn her first career win. Game two saw freshman Tara Trainer (1-1) two-hit the Panthers while fanning 10 batters, the most for an Indiana pitcher since Meaghan Murphy struck out 13 against Michigan State on April 9, 2014. The Hoosiers also saw a 10-strikeout performance against Penn State on April 11, 2014.
Against Georgia State, the Hoosiers struck early as senior Kassi Famer knocked a bloop single to right-center to bring in seniors Kelsey Dotson and Shannon Cawley.
One inning later, sophomore Rebecca Blitz sliced a single up the middle to bring in sophomore Taylor Uden and push the Indiana advantage to 3-0.
The Aggies would respond in the bottom of the frame on a two-run homer to center by Bailey Lewis to bring in Sarina Jaramillo.
However, Utah State would get no closer as Wood replaced starting pitcher Emily Kirk and retired 11 straight batters before giving up a single to Jaramillo in the bottom of the sixth.
Meanwhile the Indiana bats continued to come up big as Uden pushed the lead to 4-2 in the third on a sacrifice fly to bring in Cawley. The final Hoosier run came on Blitz's second RBI of the day as she scored sophomore Rachel O'Malley in the sixth.
Game two saw the Hoosiers down early as Georgia State took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Mandy Blackwell in the first frame.
The Panther lead would only last an inning as Alyssa Rosati scored to tie the game in the second off a single by Uden.
One inning later, Indiana took the lead for good as IU put up three runs in the third inning off a trio of hits and two Georgia State errors. After back-to-back errors by the Panthers put freshman Sarah Galovich and Blitz on, Cawley doubled to right field to make it 2-1. Next batter up, Dotson singled to right to score sophomore Erin Lehman, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Trainer tossed a complete game in the win. After surrendering the lone Georgia State run in the first inning, she retired 13 consecutive Panther batters before surrendering just one of her three total walks in the sixth inning.
