MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Indiana Baseball (1-2) dropped a pair of close games on Saturday to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders at Reese Smith Jr. Field with a 3-2 loss in 11 innings and a 5-4 defeat in 10.
Game 1
In the early stages of the first game, sophomore Laren Eustace scored on a Craig Dedelow single, to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 edge after one inning of play.
After a two-run fifth inning for the Blue Raiders (2-1), Eustace scored again on a double down the left field line from Tony Butler, his first career hit in an Indiana uniform.
With the game knotted up at two heading to the bottom of the 11th inning, the Blue Raiders went on to score the game winning run on a fielder's choice where the runner beat the throw home.
Senior Evan Bell got the start for the Hoosiers on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings allowing two earned runs, four hits and striking out two. Junior Jake Kelzer came out of the bullpen to finish the game for Indiana, going 2.2 strong innings, allowing two hits while striking out four and walking none.
Game 2
Forty-five minutes after the conclusion of the first game, the Hoosiers came out strong, hanging a three-spot in the second inning of game two. Sophomore Logan Sowers homered for the second time on the weekend, belting a solo shot the opposite way to give Indiana a 1-0 lead. Freshman Ryan Fineman minutes later came through, launching a two-run homer, the first of his career, to put the Hoosiers ahead 3-0.
IU surrendered a run to Middle Tennessee in the fifth inning to make it 3-1, before allowing a two-run homer to Kevin Dupree of the Blue Raiders in the sixth inning to knot the game up at three.
After Middle Tennessee put up a number in a third consecutive inning to make it 4-3 after seven, Indiana found itself trailing with two runners on and two outs in the ninth. Freshman Luke Miller came through, singling up the middle on the first pitch to tie the contest up at four and sending it to extra innings.
In the 10th inning, Middle Tennessee loaded the bases with one out. A ground ball got the force at home, but as the Hoosiers were attempting to get the double play, Fineman's throw to first went wide and the runner on second scored in result.
Senior Caleb Baragar started for the Hoosiers and did not allow a hit through his first four-plus innings of action. He finished allowing three hits in 5.1 innings of work and striking out three.
Indiana returns to action next week as it travels to national powerhouse Cal State Fullerton.
