INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Former Indiana running back Jordan Howard is in Indianapolis this week for the NFL Combine. Check out the transcript from his interview with media today.
Q: What do you think of the process so far?
A: I'm not tired, yet. But I'm enjoying the process, taking it one day at a time.
Q: Keeping you up late with meetings?
A: Not really. Probably tonight. I've got a last meeting about 10:45.
Q: Will you do all of the drills?
A: I'm doing position drills, lifting.
Q: Running the 40?
A: I'm running the 40 on Pro Day (April 1).
Q: What do you expect to run?
A: I'm hoping 4.4.
Q: Stress fracture change the way you trained?
A: That was back in like high school, so I'm not even thinking about that.
Q: Injuries last year at IU; ankle and knee?
A: Ankle and my knee. My ankle, somebody fell on it so I couldn't control that. My knee, it started hurting in August and I was trying to
fight through it until it gave out.
Q: Frustrating season because of injuries?
A: Yeah it was very frustrating because I couldn't be out there helping my team.
Q: Why come out early?
A: I felt like I was ready. I felt like I had matured enough to play in the NFL. I was ready for the next challenge and I know I was getting close
to almost 800 carries in my career and running backs don't have that long of a life span.
Q: You worry about wear and tear?
A: Yeah, I worry about that.
Q: What was it like the last year at UAB?
A: It's been pretty much a whirlwind. I had to stay focused and stay positive through everything and know that God has a plan for everything.
Q: Prefer running in a power, man-gap scheme or a zone system?
A: It doesn't really matter. I think I'm pretty versatile and I can play in any type of offensive scheme. I think I can play in any system.
Q: UAB is re-starting football program...
A: I think it's very exciting that they're giving more people the opportunity to play football at the Division I level, and I think it's the right thing to do.
Q: IU getting to be RB U?
A: I guess so. We're doing something well. My position coach (Deland McCullough) does a great job working with us on our technique and everything.
Q: Prepared for the next level?
A: Coach McCullough prepared us a lot. He had us draw plays up on the board and talk through plays so we'd know how to go through
interviews and tell teams about some of our plays.
Q: Are you a 3-down back?
A: I feel like I'm a three-down back. At IU they didn't really focus on throwing the ball to the running back,
but I feel like I can catch passes and protect.
Q: You pay attention to your workload at RB?
A: It's not something I pay attention to in a game, how many carries. I take as many carries as I can in a game. But a running back,
we know our life span isn't that long and 800 carries, that's a lot just for college.
Q: Procedure on the knee; meniscus?
A: I had a procedure on my knee the week of Thanksgiving. I'm 100 percent now.
Q: Who did you talk with when you decided to leave school early?
A: I talked to my mom and my position coach. He was just giving me information. And I talked to my uncle. They were telling me they
would just support whatever decision I would make.
Q: Combine is about getting clearance on injuries...
A: I already got checked out. It went very well.
Q: Much sleep so far?
A: Not much. I probably went to sleep at like 12:30 last night, was up at like 4:30 this morning for the drug test.
