INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Former Indiana offenisve lineman Jason Spriggs is in Indianapolis this week for the NFL Combine. Check out the transcript from his interview with media today.
Q: How has the process been?
A: I'm having a great time.
Q: Process since college season ended, momentum for you...
A: I think the Senior Bowl went well and I'm hoping this goes well. Just trying to continue to be positive about it and keep my head down and keep working.
Q: What do you want to show at Combine?
A: I just want to further let people recognize my athleticism and kind of how I can move. That is something I can show here.
Q: Describe yourself as a lineman...
A: I describe myself as more of an athletic lineman than most. I use that to my strength.
Q: How?
A: Especially in a zone scheme and being able to get around edges and get back against pass rushers.
Q: How often in 3-point stance?
A: Quite a bit. Probably about 50-50.
Q: Will have to do more of that in NFL...
A: I was very blessed to be in an offense that did a lot of things. We were multi-dimensional and that helped me a lot.
Q: Up-tempo at IU...
A: We ran a very tempo offense, but we kind of hit everything . . . power schemes.
Q: How many teams have you talked with?
A: I think everybody pretty much talks with everybody. We haven't done the formal interviews yet
Q: Take pride in 47 starts?
A: That's something I hold very highly of myself. I had that black stain of the one missed start. It's something I set
out to do and I'm very happy I was able to do that.
Q: Started at IU at 260...
A: I really just focused on fundamentals and playing as hard as you can through the whistle. It opens up a lot of doors.
Q: Natural fit for a zone scheme...
A: I definitely want to show I can be a fit in any scheme. With the offense we run at Indiana, we kind of do everything. I can fit wherever.
Q: Left tackle your natural position?
A: I feel more natural at left tackle, but I've been working at both.
Q: How has that gone?
A: It's definitely not an easy thing to do, just switch from left to right. It wasn't an easy thing for me. I've had to work on it quite a bit.
Q: Biggest hole in your game?
A: I think late in the run game I tend to get a little bit higher on my toes.
Q: How do you correct that?
A: Just through repetition, really.
Q: Is 301 pounds a comfortable weight?
A: That's what I played at this last season, right between 300 and 305. I dropped a little bit of body fat.
Q: Where do you expect to go in draft?
A: I've seen I've been all over the board. It varies quite a bit. It's something I try not to pay much attention to.
Q: IU threw the ball a lot, but Nate Sudfeld not too banged up...
A: Any time you have somebody back there like Nate, that's something left tackles take very highly. And that's something that coming in as a freshman I knew that was going to be a big goal for me.
Q: Sudfeld's command of the offense...
A: Nate really runs the whole offense for us. He brings the play in from the sideline. He tells us the checks. Without a quarterback like Nate, I don't think the offense would run as smooth as it did.
Q: What was it like blocking one season for Jordan Howard?
A: He adds almost another outlook on the offense, almost like an attitude. With a guy like Jordan, a power back. We were almost missing Tevin (Coleman) in preseason with that speed and
burst. But Jordan came out the first couple of games and knocked a few kids' helmets off. He was running straight through guys. He really showed the effort to make the extra yards, the first
down or the touchdown or whatever it was. That allowed us to rally behind him.
Q: Ohio State defense has 7 guys at combine, how did IU offense hold up?
A: I thought we did really well. It was a very close game. It came down to I think 12 or 13 seconds on the 3-yard line. I think we matched up well against them.
Q: Did you face Joey Bosa?
A: Yes. I think we both had our shots. I wouldn't say either one of us came out of that game as the victor.
Q: Where have you heard you'll go in draft?
A: I've been all over the place, really. Anywhere from first, second, third round. I don't pay attention to that.
Q: Worthy of a first-round pick?
A: I like to think so.
Q: Formal interviews?
A: 12 right now.
Q: Most difficult matchup?
A: Honestly if I can take it to the Senior Bowl, Noah Spence was one of the best I played this year. Just the speed I wasn't expecting. It wasn't something we knew. It really put an emphasis on (making a) quick decision.
