BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - New Indiana football strength and conditioning coach Keith Caton wants everything the Hoosiers do to be explosive.
Even the way they enter the weight room.
The Hoosiers have added a pre-workout ritual to their offseason training where they gather in the hallway outside Memorial Stadium's W. Jay and Nancy Wilkinson Performance Center as if it were gameday, not a mid-winter workout. As they fill up the hallway just outside the weight room, the players begin to shove one another, jumping up and down and yelling to inject energy into the start of strength training.
Caton likes it because it's explosive, just like everything he teaches. The players? They just think it's fun.
"That's probably the most exciting part," rising senior offensive tackle Dimitric Camiel said. "Everybody's coming off the field, we're bumping around and jumping—we're hyped. Then we come in the weight room and it's time to go to work. You don't want to just walk in, you want to come in and attack it."
The new weight room entrance reflects the passion Caton says he wants to see on a daily basis.
Since arriving in Bloomington at the start of the new year, Caton has made speed and intensity a priority. The hopes are that the commitment to finishing through workouts translates to the football field.
"We're moving the bar fast. We're trying to be dynamic," Caton said. "We're trying to be explosive, just like Coach (Kevin) Wilson's offense. That's what we're trying to do across the board. Just be explosive in everything we do."
To an unknowing onlooker, Caton doesn't show many signs of being new to the program. He's already established his values and a working relationship with the players that newly hired defensive line coach Mark Hagen said last week took him by surprise when he saw his first workout.
"You would have thought, and this is what I thought, this looks like a guy that's been here for well over a year," Hagen said. "He's got his program established. Not just a couple of weeks, which is what it's been. I would have thought if I was just an average person off the street that Coach Caton has been here for at least a year."
Rising junior linebacker Tegray Scales said he likes the way he and his teammates have bought into Caton's workout plan and the physical strides the team has made heading into next month's spring practices.
Just as Caton has stressed, Scales said finishing workouts has been the priority. If the Hoosiers can complete workouts all the way through with energy to spare, it might carry over into games and make up for the five single-possession losses Indiana suffered last season.
"We need to work on finishing," Scales said. "So that's a big key with Coach Caton, working on the small things so we can finish up big games. He is what Coach Wilson said he is. He knows what he's doing. He takes care of us."
And the players appear to have taken care of Caton, too.
"You've got guys that are coming in every day and they're working hard to try to get better," Caton said. "It's enjoyable to come in to work with these guys."
